Based on the popular UT2004 mod, Valve is releasing its Source remake tonight, for free!

We used to play this with a bunch of people back in the old days, it's an incredibly fun 4 player coop game.

Yea it's only persistent for the duration of the mission and/or your game, each mission exists out of several large levels. There's numerous difficulty settings and once custom maps start pouring in I'm sure the replayability will be big enough. So no MMO micro-transactions or whatever.

There's also a (team) deathmatch multiplayer mode.

It looks nice, but it's hard to believe for me that this game is 100% free, unless it's fan made, but if it is total free big respect for Valve.

The team behind it (original UT2004 mod) were hired by valve to make a source version, however valve put them to work on L4D instead, they worked on this in their spare time and valve is giving it away for free to make people to use steam.

looks like a top down L4D with aliens, i'm in. I love how the Source engine is so highly moddable. Valve are freakin geniuses, it's too bad that the rest of the gaming world hasn't caught on "make your engine freakin modable, we'll buy your crap game and call it awesome" HL2 is still selling today because of the mods. I played the campaign once and have played all the mods since, it's the only reason i got it.

i doubt that, probably the developers realized that it is just a cheap clone of the original Alien Breed series that got with Alien Breed:Impact a new sequel on PC this month

I'm a player of the original Alien Swarm which was the UT2004 mod.

God DAMN those were some fun times.

Noobs with the flame thrower were so much fun to watch and make take point. If they were in the back they'd torch the entire team instantly lmao.

But wasn't that the point of the game 0/o

Like when I used to play oldschool AvP multiplayer....nothing better than a bunch of noob marines firing off flamers and grenades in the middle of their squad.

I'm sure I remember Apex or someone bringing this mod up a year or so ago and thinking it looked pretty cool then. Completely forgot about it till now but definitely up for a few games.

It's fracking great but needs more custom content.

yeh it only has a few real guns needs loads more wonder if they are going to add more stuff

its good fun but not sure about the longevity. Completed it on second hardest difficulty with unknown and speigas in around 90 minutes.

They release the SDK (basically, the Mapmaking software you need) with it when it was released, so basically, people should already be working on this if I'm correct...
Also, since its a source game, allows for map cross overs...

He's still got to make it alien swarm friendly, but its kinda proof that people are out there making maps and stuff for this game!
Has anyone tried playing this First person mode yet btw? Don't know the commands, but a quick search in the alien swarm source steam forum should get you the commands you need. Must admit, it looks pretty spiffing even in that view, specically if you want to spice it up/make it harder and tense :)

I don't like this game at all.

Same ways Alien swarm is boring, but that's because i dont like thoose type of games i guess.

Overall, a very good game. A bit shortish in terms of campaign length, and trying to get all the weapons and upgrades can take a long while, but I am not complaining. A free game is a free game.

how do you turn alien swarm into fps?

Try and go to the steam forums and google it. If you can't find it, just reply back here saying you can't, and I shall grab how to do it from a source community that I'm part of, should be able to get you the code in roughly 5 hours :)
