Hey folks, my mapping time has been severely cut down by starting up work a couple weeks ago.  But after a few aborted projects, I'm finally getting another map ready.  This one is fairly large at 768x640.  The concept is a heavily forested river valley with a large axis depot on one side and a hilltop fortification on the other.  Both teams start on the same side of the river valley.  The goal is for the river to be a river that is running dry and is therefore passable at all points.  Here are some screen shots of what I have so far!

First screenshot is the top down view.  The depot is basically finalized because I took it as a stamp from another map of mine that never saw the light of day.  I spent several hours today setting up the hilltop fort on the opposite side of the river.  Making trenches is a pain in the ass!  But I think the effect is good.  Imagine it will all be covered in pine trees and there will be a few tiny farms.

I may put in another bridge, but mainly my goal is to have almost the entire river fordable so infantry and vehicles can cross.

Can anyone point me toward a map with really well-made pine forests?  I'm using mission 7 as a model right now, but I would be curious to see more.

Well it is slightly wider than it is long, 768x640.  Do you not think square is good?

hmmm... well my goal was actually to heavily forest it but I suppose I could just heavily forest parts of it.  I know I don't want ti to be all farm fields as that has been way overdone in CoH maps.  Though I do have a few farms in (added since the screenshots) in isolated patches.

Well, it seems I may have been too ambitious in my map size Undecided.  I successfully forested the corner near the allies spawn point and then loaded it in skirmish mode to try things out.  Here I discovered several issues:

1. I test airborne using a custom mod I made where all the recon/strafing/bombing run are free with 1 sec cooldown, and while they work in most places, the fortified hill sometimes causes planes to abort their runs.

2. With just about 1/8 of the map forested it caused my system to chug when I panned the camera with 7 CPUs spamming units left and right.  I blame both the high volume of trees and the water reflection calculations.

3.  All the fighting occured in the forest and around the hill, there was never any reason to cross the river to the other side, so perhaps the map is too large in the horizontal direction or else one team needs to spawn on the opposite side of the river.

So I think I will either need to have lots of grassy clearings and/or I may want to use the stamp tool to make a new map that encompasses the area shown by the red rectangle in the last screenshot.  Any suggestions on making it more playable?

I would decrease the size. I noted Verdunkeln had similar problems.
