I have Hearts of Iron 3, but I find managing all those units to be frustrating.  So, does anyone know of a decent wwII scale (non-turn based) game similar to Hearts of Iron 3?

Making History: The Calm & The Storm

Other paradox titles are very good but really the king of WWII Grand Strategy Games is HOI3. Nothing else comes even close to that game. If it's too much micro then just set the AI to help you or play as a smaller nation.

The most recent 'graphical' grand WW2 game you might want to check out... Pacific Storm and its British expansion pack.  I never did like Hearts of Iron 3 or 2, too much like a spreadsheet, preferred something along the lines of the old Pacific Threatre of Operations (PTO) and Pacific Storm comes close.

Battlefront.com (the greatest company to make realistic war games) has several tactical and grand wargames, you might want to check out Strategic Command series there.

Guess you don't know what grand strat games are

I never did like Hearts of Iron 3 or 2, too much like a spreadsheet,

Now i know you never played either of them.

And steer clear of Gary Grigsby they run really resource heavy for like half the game, what i would suggest is trying some of the smaller HOI 2 campaigns like barbarossa, so you get the feel of it.

I did play both of them Sparatan, and the game is really too much a spreadsheet, at least Empires and the old Civs gave me info that was meaningful and relevant, HOI just puts too much nonsense on the game that it feels like you're playing a number crunching accountant game over an actual war game of grand scale.

Civs and Empires were oversimplified that way. Units had barely any values, and the combat was simple and the games often easy. (mass unit rush, mass unit rush, mass unit rush, I WIN!)

Truth is, HOI is one of the few game were you actually gotta use some brain power, plan out your research, supply lines and plan of attack, guess looking at more then 2 unit values is a spreadsheet though, forgot it also isn't shiny like Civs and Empires.

Hearts of Iron 2 is heads and shoulders above the terrible debacle that was Hearts of Iron 3.

I'd even go so far as to say that HO2 is one of the finest games ever made.

So anyway, disregarding the nonsense that is HOI (as he originally said in OP that it isn't what he was looking for), my suggestions still stand as something not overly complex and can be grappled with.

Managing the units is pretty much the point of the game. So, asking for a game similar where you do not manage all those units is somewhat silly.

Again you don't understand scope then if you compare all War games to be the same.  The scope of HOI is a bit too complex, and as the other suggestions show, they are plenty of other war games where it isn't so fiddly.

@ Lai - Hmm... is that even a WW2 game? Doesn't sound like a grand WW2 type game.. Muscle and Brain.. ^^

Almost ALL the other ones out there except for a few like Arsenal Of Democracy (except thats HOI 2 with better scripting) are complete half assed crap trying to be like HOI and EU and take the GRAND out of Grand Strategy.

You should try out the "expansion" for HoI3, semper fi. (it's really more of an gargantuan patch they charge money for)

Improves the game on many fronts, especially when it comes to managing your units.
