1v1 would be bad if they didnt increase the pop, with the current pop fielding a lot of support/artillery/heavy units would just get bombed by zerg spam tactics or backcapping.

1v1 would work if there were a certain set of rules. Maybe create a new game mode exclusively for 1v1 where you dont get over 30 pop and you start out with 15.

I think a 3v3 tournament would need to be similar to a football season or something
with a league ladder, set events and so on. It would need to be a season, and id think allowing experience to be in play but no doctrines would be the way to run it.
PP gain would need to be capped as well to represent like an attendance income and so on.
you would say have each team play say 18 matches over a period. depending on size of the list of teams you then take the top 8 for quarter finals and then it become elimination with the 4 surviving going through to the semis and then the final 2 going through the final.
Of course there would need to be a serious prize at the end, of even just a really cool bragging rights component in the mod.
But it would be doable.
