OK, after reading some different things, I was thinking if it would be possible to have the upgrades determine some units pool cost rather than creating different "kinds" of units. This could possibly be done for all units, but of course we'd want to focus on doctrine units first I'd assume.

For example, AB and ABRs need to be separate units since they use different base weapons. But regular AB could be 2 pool value, but buying RRs would increase their pool value by 2 = 4 total. Right now if you have AB rifles and regular AB, every AB you get you feel the need to put RRs on them because they are high pool value. but I wouldn't mind fielding vanilla AB if they were a lower pool value.

You could do the same with rifles, normal rifle could be 1 pool reserve, but any upgrade would increase it to 2.

So in summary make it so pool cost is done through upgrades instead of creating new units or separate units.
