If you have xp it might be propblem with hdd if xps detects 5 hdd errors it sets it to pio, instead of DMA, it looks like what you are describing go to device menager and uninstal, well fuck it, I googled it to tired to write this myself.
I don't agree with violent video games. This article on DMA problems happens to come up in google early, and the answer to the question is not quite complete. So I'm going to add what you need to change, in case someone else has this problem. Violence begets violence.
The solution is to remove the controller driver in windows. Restart, let windows redetect the hardware. This resets the options that keep your hardware turned down to PIO. Then edit the registry:
