Similar thing has happened to me. I personally think the memory in the graphics card got corrupted. Simple fix would be to get a new card, I am looking at the 9600 for price/performance.

well glad to know 9600 is good. I may just go ahead and upgrade it this week. I need a new processor though, my 4800 dual core isn't helping much on some games, heck a 3 year old game sputters sometimes (Just Cause) and it's annoying me

NO.
DO NOT BUY A 4850 or a 8800.
Dude, you've got a shit procesor, spending money on something like a 8800 would be a waste of money, since the card would never even work at full efficiency, if it would work at all due to the PSU most likely not taking it for long.
Dudes, don't ever tell a person with a 2800+ Athlon to get a fucken 8800!!!

Good point Mysthalin_Axis.  The ancient CPU will be a bottleneck.  For that matter... with a an Athlon 2800, does your motherboard even have a PCIe slot?

What is your upgrade budget?

Nice call Kolath.

It could be the power supply as well, especially if you've been experiencing weird shit outside of graphics problems.

Be honest, do you suspect your system was heavily infected, because if your mobo was damaged, then it doesn't matter what you buy Tongue
(mobo gets screwed, then every single component has bad communication)
