Ventrilo registration

Hello,
I'd like to know what is vent registration. I've no mic but I'd just like to hear my temmates, and I've never played a game WITH people speaking on vent. So must I be registered on ven to heard them, or is it a setting problem ??

It's uncliked. But today I've seen that my ouput was on "default". I switched it on my speakers. But maybe it's because I've not played a lot games, and nobody was speaking ?
And so, what does vent registration do ?
