When they say that it took four Shermans to take out a Tiger, what do they mean?

For instance "three men to take out one defender" means that the offense wants to achieve a 1:1 casualty ratio with the defenders. Judging from the way it's written, I suspect it means that, if four Shermans attacked a Tiger, the Tiger would kill one or two of them on average (not those crazy Tank Aces) before being owned by air support or something. But I need clarification.

3 shermans were classicly used as bait whilst the other sherman crept behind the tiger. that being the only place they were even likely to penetrate the tigers armour. the 88mm kwk gun on the tiger would on average destroy 2 or all of the bait shermans. it was a very bad war for allied tank commanders.
