In all honesty the +25% speed at vet1 for allied armor rocks. So does derailing threads.

Nah. Only encourages minmaxing. It would have to be quite expensive to not be mandatory and you'd have to seperate supression fire out into a seperate upgrade and then you run into UI issues because the allied player would constantly be searching for their SF squad.
