We finally completed the coast-to-coast walk along Hadrian's Wall. I'll post a couple of pics when I get chance, but we managed to raise about £150 for wounded UK service veterans.

You should see the state of my feet after nearly 80 miles, hehe.

(I'm the one on the right in the cream t-shirt)

(That bit isn't Roman, it's 14th Century, but guess where they stole the stone to build it, hehe)

(Our group at Tynemouth, the end of our trek. Unfortunately the resolution, coupled with my crooked jaw, makes me look a bit odd in this one.)

(And finally me nursing sore feet)

If I lived in a country small enough to walk across, with things to look at that old, I would totally do it too.  Sadly I live in a country way to big and scary where we rip old (haha 300yr if you can even consider that old) buildings down to build parking lots

Dafuq man, don't ask for proof if you'll refuse it if it's not in your favor, logic fallacy for the bloody win.

ROFL

Well, the wall itself it about 1881 years old, but we crossed at one of the narrower points (The Romans had the sense to build a wall that size across the thin bit), about 75-80 miles of walking altogether.

America does have some historical flavour, sadly they drove most off the natives off of the ancient sites and flattened them, although your modern historical heritage hasn't been lost, look at the interest surround the Old West, etc. But your nation has an ideal of improvement, progress and technological advancement, don't scoff at that. History is nice but can also get in the way of sensible practices.

Besides, this IS your history too, this is history that relates to the descendants of all Romano-European nations. You'd be surprised at how much the Roman Empire has influenced modern America.

But if anyone ever tries to tell you the modern railroad gauge is due to the width of a Roman chariot, slap them around a bit with a herring and direct them to snopes.com.

Depends which gauge you're talking about, the US still hasn't standardised, Russia standardised to a broader gauge than most railways.

4' 8 3/4" is standard gauge, but only because that's what they used in the colliery railways Stephenson built his locomotives for, and all railways connected up to that subsequently.

I was looking at the hill we'd just climbed up and the view from the top of it actually, but yes, it does make for a classic 'Where the feck am I?' picture.

Yep. People in Europe can go to a school over a thousand years old.

Our oldest is roughly 350. Hoorah. Curse you history.
