Hey guys,
I'm looking to buy a cheap laptop (under $600, hopefully one under $500) for university that can run EiR.
I am looking through futureshop.ca and bestbuy.ca

Its been a while since I looked at hardware and apparently they've decided to rename everything in the least helpful way possible.
Anyone have any advice?

so far i have found these 4:

Alright, after comparing every computer you listed above the best shot would be:

Due to it's high video memory and fair price i would gone with this.

HP makes solid PC and can last really long, my dad still uses one of the first laptop HP made, for work and it still runs like a bullet.

The design is also pretty slight and cool, this pc can far by run Coh.
Meh, i think i'd gone with this HP.

Good luck. Cheesy

Edit once more, nvm Ghz talk, i bet it can run coh by far..

HPs are built like tanks, good quality construction. My baby momma got mad and threw my 17" HP at me in a parking lot, it cracked the case but it still worked fine.

Thats the only good story I have for laptop toughness.

My number one priority is making it able to play CoH
Otherwise I will go insane without gaming for a year!

i need it to seem like it can play coh but its not obviously a gaming rid. low graphics and all, i just want the game, none of the pretty.

Those newegg laptops i could get a more expensive one if it seems like a great deal... but like I said I am no longer versed in hardware and am having a hell of an awful time sorting through it

Basically, key features you want.

4gb of RAM.

Non-Intel Graphics card, preferably a dedicated card. The 4000 series ATI should work for CoH, as well as the mid 200 and any 300 series NVIDIA. You could probably get away with a lower one if you don't mind all settings to loooow.

Everything is dual core or higher now.

The i3-i5-i7 are a great series of processor, but the older dual cores work fine.

well i figure ill go with this one:
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/id/10146058.aspx
the price is exactly my (graduation awards) + (international physics competition award / 5 team members)

hehe if my name wasn't so unique I'd have a lot of interesting conversations with you guys but it sucks to have the whole interweb gaming life separation.  Cool

This doesn't look to bad if you wanted a step up, more cash though. Too bad you can't get away with a desktop =p

i did use google for that,
none of those prices are justifiably a good deal compared to the $470 laptop
except for the 599 one from that shady poorly reviewed dealer....

I bought a nice ASUS when I got back, but it was $849 on sale. Huzzzah!

Just find something pretty decent with a dedicated card and you should be fine.

Top one, sure you save on heat with the slower PoS, but really, they won't overheat as long as you don't try using it on top of a giant fluffy blanket or leave it on the carpet. Make sure you have air circulation under the machine and its fine.

Definitely the top one.

so its on sale for $520 ($587.57 after taxes) but only for another week.
Do you think A better deal will come up or time to just go for it?

EDIT: i have been looking through the back to school sales and this is still the best one for price

I dont see how laptops can ever be good for gaming, even medium-spec type of games like old COH.. with their abundant overheating issues

Why manufactors refuse to make decent cooling for laptops, is beyond me. They're good at making heat-resistant hardware for portable computers but they are terrible at not making the machine itself a smoking inferno
