New Computer Build
«
on:
July 31, 2010, 04:52:13 pm »
I know there are a number of computer gurus in here. ( aka computer geeks ) I have a friend here locally that I have asked to build me a kick as Comp. He has proposed the following for $1,300.00 Canadian. Here's what I told him I need it for:
I want to play CoH on the highest setting ( if internet can handle )
I use Auto cad for my Architectural work.
I use excel spreadsheets extensively
I use Simply Accounting for my book work. My wife's computer and mine are connected for accounting. She often is using the accounting software while I am playing CoH. ( pisses her off, but that's another topic.
Here is what he is suggesting. I would like your input as to how kick ass this will be. My budget is flexible and I am willing to pay another $1,000.00 if necessary.
Chassis Alien ware Aurora Chassis
Processor Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core Processor (2.8GHz 8MM Cache)
Memory 6 GB DDR3 1600MHz
Hard Drive 1 TB Sata3 6GB per second
Video Card Dual 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5670 CrossfireX AT5670D Enabled
Optical Drive Single Drive 24x CD/DVD burner with double layer write capability
Floppy Alienware 19-in-1 media card reader
Sound Card Integrated 7.1 channel audio
USB 3.0 on mother board
Cooling Noctwa cooler with 2 x 120mm fans
Operating system Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit

hey, tank, I've built my own computers for a while now and what you got there is a really good price for something of that magnitude. that is really a pretty good computer for a great price. it's going to kick a lot of ass. though u might want to upgrade ur video cards. if you really want to overkill every game out there right now crossfire ati 5970s HDs since you can spend another 1k. THEN you can absolutely destroy every game out there. it'll be absolutely ridiculous. or if thats a bit to expensive i'd definitely go with the HD 5850s. those are at a pretty good price right now for what they do.
or on the other hand you could always go with the HD 5870 eyefinity 6 edition with the 2GBs if you don't want to crossfire.
also, if you do crossfire you're going to be generating heat like a beast, so you might want to invest in water cooling. make sure you use good thermal compounds like arctic silver.
Oh, and what motherboard are you using?

a lot of the newer faster cards these days generate a lot of heat. you have to make sure that your computer is properly ventilated and if not you'll generate a lot of heat and accumulate a lot of dust. you just have to make sure that you don't have a ton of wires everywhere and make sure air can be circulated in your case then you shouldn't have any problems.

The dual video card is overkill, you won't need it for anything. Also generates extra heat and requires more power which means the PSU makes more heat.

Yes, my friend got Geforce 9800 GTX BLACK EDITION = Dual.
The card is so powerful but it got burned within a year lmao. Not even fans or taking of the case would stop the burn.

We are considering Alienware High-performance Liquid cooling as well. Would this reduce the possibility of the V/C burning out?
I really know fuck all about in the inner workings of a computer, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Usually cards burn out because they are overclocked, even factory overclocking. Its not really needed.

Tbh, I paid £330 for all the parts currently sat in my computer apart from the HDD and my DVD drive.
I can comfortably run CoH on highest settings, the only reason I can't do Ultra High is because I'm running on XP therefore, no higher than DX9.
That translates into roughly $500 (US Dollars)
The HDD and DVD Drive I simply used from my old computer as they are still usable and compatible, but could really use replacing in all honesty... 120 Gig HDD... It was actually an alright size at the time I got it. xD

I mean I know Obama was the first one in EiR to get a card. and tbfh the Race card is pretty OP. but Romney has the K.K.K., those guys seem to camo anywhere. So OP units from both sides.

The most wasteful part, potentially, that I can see would be the case. How much is the case? Chances are you can find a reasonably attractive looking case that works at least as well for much less.
I'm not up on current graphics prices, and especially not in canada. That being said, any of ATi's mid-range options won't steer you wrong, and I know that really even one of their older high end options (4870) will run most games on very high settings (CoH maxed excepting anti-aliasing, certainly) and it's quite cheap.
For NVidia I'm not up on their latest offerings even less-so than I am for AMD/ATi.

i dont know where you guys are getting temps from but the 5770 i use (max settings on most games) runs cool at most 55-60 degrees.
agree with others though tank, try and up the vid card to the 5870 or 5770 (or nvidia counter part).

Video Card Dual 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5670 CrossfireX AT5670D Enabled
crossfire with lowend cards is a really bad idea
these two HD5670 are not faster than a single HD5770 (
http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-5670-review-test-crossfire/9
) with all its disadvantages like possible micro lags, no crossfire support in games where is no profile for in the ATI Driver
trade at least that against a single 5770 or better Card (e.g. ATI 5850, ATI 5870, NV GTX460, NV GTX470, NV GTX480)
good performance (much better than 2x5670 crossfire) and a fair deal is currently the NVidia GTX460 1GB
