If an Item in a game doesn't serve a practical purpose then why bother getting it. Especially if you have to pay for it or work your ass off for it.

Team Fortress 2 is a good example. People tried for weeks on end to get hats. When they finally did they stopped playing. Same with people who chase down achievements or customization options in online games. Servers no practical purpose, don't get it

Make game cost $50 Dollars in Pre-order and offer TF2 items

After 2 months of release and small patch fixes.
Offer a Map-pack, weapons, other things as a DLC and put their cost to $5-15.

After 1 year Repeat the same process or release a Continuation to the game with new engine and new DLCs and make the previous one cheaper for a X Period of time to up its sells.

Rinse and Repeat the process until game saga becomes boring and/or dies. Make a new game saga!
