Catching a line of 4 krauts, one with an MG, the other three with Kar's all standing in a neat little line behind a wall, from behind never gets old. 4 rounds from the Garand (Playing the Darkest Hour mod, brings in the Western Front) and ya can move on.
That sounds like the shit I like, but in FH this is not possible and thats why I think it kinda sux, garand recoil is crazy too, you're lucky if you can kill 2 guys before they kill you.

...in FH the one surprising the enemy while he has his pants down will rule the field.
And as Hicks already mentioned... every gun is deadly in FH.
If the guy u r attacking is not surprised by your ambush he will have his chance to kill you while your gun is "out of recoill-control".
Your out-of-control-gun will simply fail in aiming the next enemy in time before he manage to point his ready to shot gun on you. Maybe you shot his arm but u will not kill him as easily.
This all gives a nice blood rush while playing. I was very exhausted after a long FH match

Yeah, should warn you with RO and DH, it's an extreme amount of realism going on - Very little tweaks are done for balance. If one side was out gunned or out supplied in a particular engagement, that's how it was.
Before your eyes and reactions adjust to how the game is played, you'll spend a *lot* of time dying and running around before you get anything productive done. Once you do though, it's an absolute blast.
Due to the realistic nature of it, you do tend to get some moments of utter heroism (And about a dozen moments of stupidity for each one mind you) which'll stick in your mind for at least a few rounds afterwards. xD
I was clearing a house by myself with my Enfield and Bayonet attached, to find it completely empty save the last room at the side of the house. Which happened to have a MG42 in it, pointed at the bloody door. God knows why, he didn't fire the moment he spotted me, likely because he was *just* setting up as I walked in, and instead of trying a shot from the hip (Which is appaulingly inaccurate due to the way your gun swings about while you walk - you'll understand upon playing it) I just sprinted right past his line of fire (and a subsequent burst of MG fire) and proceeded to put an Enfield round into the back of his head.
Being happy as a pig in shit at this point, I decided I'd pick up my shiny new MG42 and find a suitable window or doorway to mount it... But before I could, some nutter with his Kar98k ran through the door I just came through and fired a round. Missing me completely. In total shock I quickly pulled out my Webley and emptied all 6 rounds into his face (Not the cleverest idea, as will soon be seen) feeling like a twitchy pro. Half way through reloading my Webley (And it takes the piss) a third Kraut decided he'd run in too with his Kar98k. Thinking I dont get lucky a third time, I started moving to the side and heard the inevitable crack of the rifle shot. To which I was miraculously still standing - and my Webley finished reloading. He too ate all 6 rounds in desperation.
Feeling like the luckiest bastard that could breathe, I went to set up my shiny new MG42 in a window... And the bloody round ended. T_T

Basically the infantry combat is so bad compared to BC2.
Its really hard to distinguish friend from foe.
Most of the time you are just walking or driving around and all of a sudden you're dead.
Welcome to more realistic combat!
Play ARMA 2, drive around for 20 minutes, *BEEP**BEEP*MISSILEDET-KABOOOSH
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Meaning, if you dont scout anything out, your dead. Simple as that. And you can make the same FF mistakes soldiers made during WW2.

Uniform recognition, as soon as you've got the hang of it you'll do alright.
Weapon recognition goes wonders as well, but that's less reliable as people have a knack of commandeering enemy equipment - I'll always nab an MP40/44 or an FG42 if it crosses my way and I'm a humble Rifleman.
Mind you though, I still make the occasional FF mishap still even now. Tends to happen most frequently at either very long range fighting and somebody has done an epic flank without notifying the team... Or house clearing when somebody hasn't announced their presence.
I've had epic moments on FH as well as RO/DH tbh. I remember doing some epic flanking on FH with Rayze(105TigerHunters) where we were both AT infantry with our 'Zooks. Found the main supply road for the enemy armour and hid in some bushes, waited for them to drive past and we'd both unload a rocket into their arse armour. Easy pickings.

I enjoy realistic combat but this.......meh.
Some games try to realistic with 1 shot to body or head means death. Even in modern games when the player skin has body armor on, which i think is fail in a game, developers/modders choose to ignore what body armor can stop, because they want to be hardcore..
But with HC damage rules in "realistic shooters" one thing they always VASTLY overlook is how hard it is to aim realistically. To hit a 300+m moving target even in the open with 1 or 2 shots from a basic rifle is tough as balls. While it is possible to make 400-500m shot w/ iron sight in real life, it would take good amount of concentration and luck. Even in close combat aiming is hard unless you are in a waiting supported position gun drawn.
Moving and shooting, or just shooting in combat is tougher than what it is on the range. That explains why soldiers carried 1000s of rounds with them. By these games logic all you needed during the whole war was about 100 bullets.
Plus its not fun to be running and boom dead, random dude in forest 400 meters away shot you through the bushes. Wheres that intense realistic firefight? 4 players run into another 4 players its over in about 3 seconds. Theres no bullets whizzing over head, explosions going off, running around confusion. Its just bam dead.
I think the most realistic game i played was Americas Army back in the day. You would spend a good amount of ammo trying to hit moving targets, plus when under fire your moral/aim becomes much worse, but a NCO next to you helped.
Also brothers in arms 1 was intense. It wasnt about putting people in your cross hair from a distance, b/c you miss alot. But more about suppressing, flanking and getting near enough to actually hit them.
Theres to many 1 shot 1 kill situation in these "realistic" games. Thats why i almost prefer super health realistic games, b/c neither side can get aiming right, may as well have fun then. Bad Company 1 was great fun (most of you never played it), had realism going for it, good recoil too and when you get hit i think only a sniper bullet to the head was the only 1 shot ordeal. I just found it more fun b/c you get in intense firefights. Like someone opens up with a machinegun bullets will be flying by maybe i take a hit or 3 but keep playing and then everyone is shooting like crazy.

You think all 'realistic' combat has extensive firefights? Seriously? A lot of people in combat die before any 'intense realistic firefight' begins. You know, they're just driving or walking around, then get hit by an RPG, drive over an IED, get sniped, get shot, or whatever. OMG SO UNREALISTIC right?

give project reality a try they did a lot to make sure firing at very long ranges is difficult, though i feel like FH2 may use a similar firing cone they got from PR.

tbh i gave the game a chance and if u play it on high settings and get 2 or 3 or more kills before u die it makes quite fun
but i have no idea why my game crashes after one map loading the next
(u know that this can be really a funkiller
)
and the setting can be low and its still a prob

I still prefer the Darkest Hour tank combat.
Just got 17 straight tank kills Riding solo in an M36 Jackson. Everything from 20mm Puma's to Jagdpanzer 4's, Jagdpanther's and even a KT.
The next match I got 6 kills in a row with a Marder 3 from a nice ambush flanking position and then some friendly Jagdpanther started shooting at me, I was screaming Friendly, friendly the entire time but he never stopped shooting. Eventually he hit me and exclaimed over the in game Voip "Finally, that took so many... ohh shit, fuck sorry!" Was not amused. Even with the shit graphics of DH the gameplay is excellent and gameplay always trumps looks for me in any game. Thats why X-com is timeless.

DH Infantry combat is full of win as well tbh.
Only Rifle that's gonna pick people off consistently at ranges of 400m+ are Sniper Rifles.
I've set my sights firmly on a kraut at around 300m away with my Garand who was trying to peg it, adjusted for lead and gravity, took a careful aimed shot. Hit nothing but air. Tried again, nothing but air.
Third time I got the bugger... In the leg. Took him clean off his feet lawl. Following 5 rounds made sure he stayed down.
And good luck hitting infantry poking their heads out of the sides of buildings from any respectable range... MG's especially will tear you a new arse if you try taking pot shots at them and they know where you are.

MG's are also really good at shooting your rifle from your hands. Then you gotta run back out to grab it which usually gets you killed.
