Quote from article:
“Why were you in China?” asked the passport control officer, a woman with the appearance and disposition of a prison matron.
“None of your business,” I said.
Quote from: PartyJaeger on February 02, 2012, 03:32:36 am
So is this still OK in your opinion, was he detained rightfully, do you think it cannot get any worse?
The question I would be asking would be: Why the fuck did you intentionally antagonize the border guard by not just answering the simple fucking question. Why did you respond in a way that any rational human being knows would upset the guard and cause an issue.
This guy deliberately took the steps necessary to cause a negative reaction so he could cry a fucking river and get a bunch of attention.
Now before all you bleeding hearts come back with "oh, so we should just do what we are told and stfu!!!!" Oh NO, government control!!!
No, that is not what I am saying. What I am saying is, the guy intentionally said what he new would cause a negative result.
Quote from article: "This did not go over well. She asked a series of questions, such as how long I had been in China, whether I was there on personal business or commercial business, etc. I stood silently. She said that her questions were mandated by Congress and that I should complain to Congress instead of refusing to cooperate with her."
All the questions she asked are the standard bullshit questions at customs. You say personal business for how ever long and you are done..... She even basically said she was just doing her job.
So this fucking moron intentionally pokes a stick in her face........
You see, that is the real problem. The rules put in place by the Americans do not negatively affect 99.99 % of people. It is the fucking morons that try to make a mockery of the system by throwing "IT"S MY RIGHTS!!!" in the face of authority and then wonder why their day just turned bad.
Approximately 10,000 people cross the American border per day. That's about 3.6 Million people per year. Of those 3.6 million people, you hear of about 4 or 5 people having serious issues of wrongful detention.
Just think about that for a second: 4 or 5 people out of 3.6 Million......... OH my god!! We are in a police state. Don't come to America, it's just completely fucked over here!!!!!
The internet and the media love to hype the shit out of stuff. More importantly, they will always focus on the negative issues and not post the percentage or flip side of the coin as I have done. Putting negative situation into perspective does not make great news stories........
BTW - for people like Smurf who are afraid of the invasion of their personal privacy at the airport screening. Here is a typical xray shot you can jerk off to. This photo clearly shows how invasive and revealing it is to go through airport screening. Of course, if you refuse to do that, then you can have a good ole, pat down and if you are lucky be one out of 3.6 million to have your genetailia touched.

Ummmmmm...... I believe those taxes pay for the roads you travel to get to work. The garbage removal from your curb. The education your parents, you, and your children will/have received. The street lights that light your way home at night. The police that protect you when you need it. The court systems that punish the people that wronged you or your friends.
The list goes on.
Why is it considered a slave to taxes if you receive all those services in exchange?
I actually use a toll road to get to work, I burn my garbage since I live outside the city limits, public education in the U.S. is garbage, when seconds count, the police are a minute a way and you even explained to yourself how flawed the court system is.
My tax money also goes to bombing brown people, but lets just leave that out. Also, infrastructure spending is primarily paid for in the U.S. by inflationary money printing to be extracted by taxes later, putting my children in an already daunting $40,000 of debt before they are even born.
No, if there was an infrastructure tax that I had the option to pay, I would certainly pay it. However, just throwing money at the governement does not mean it will be used in a productive fashion.
Its like giving your child $100 to buy groceries and they come back home with $40 worth of groceries and a $60 video game.
Only with the government, I cannot withdraw my consent and have only my money delegated to funding infrastrucutre and social programs. At some point, you need to recognize that every dollar you give is technically taken with a gun pointed to your face.

You are aware of the idea of public goods, though, groundfire? Things that either everybody has access to or nobody does? Things like street lighting? It's only fair that everybody gets taxed on that(now, somebody living in the country might not benefit from it as much, but, honestly - having an administration that takes a "street lighting tax" from anybody entering the city would cost more in tax payer money than just flat taxing everyone)
Not to mention the concept of externalities - where you getting some sort of benefit hurts everyone else around you (you driving to work damages the environment - I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be taxed for polluting my air and increasing the likelihood of me getting respiratory illness.
Public education in the US is indeed garbage - but it's something that's still better than homeschooling or no education at all - and you reap the benefits from people being able to count their fucking money at the till. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be, at least in part, paying for it.
So what you're saying is you want MORE police? It's not a case of the police being poorly trained and lazy on the job - it's the case of there not being enough police to remove every single last bit of crime. Emergency services can only ever do so much about their "poor arrival time" if they are 2 miles away from you in a bustling city - and the only way to fix that is by either inventing teleport machines or getting more police - one of which is technologically impossible, while the other is something that's ridiculously expensive to upkeep (every policeman you hire is one more person not instead working to create something).
Yes, you may disagree with the war in the middle east - but that's just a fact of life. Regular people never really like war unless they're nuts, and war has this one peculiarity about being expensive. Maybe once the world is a nice and happy place - you won't have your tax dollars going into it, but until then - vote for the government officials that promise you to bring the troops back and be done with it. You can't really change it.
You can very much so withdraw your consent with the government. It's called leaving the fucking country. Bloody libertarians.

Don't get me wrong Ground. All governments spend money fucking foolishly IMO.
For example: to me, the government should not be spending my tax dollars on fancy art sculptures our art and entertainment grants.
However, if I was in that industry I would completely support it - I assume?
I could also argue that both of my parents dropped out of school in grade 10, My younger brother in Grade 8 and my older brother in Grade 9. I was the only one to continue to graduation, so perhaps the government should give us back some of the money that was not spent on my families education.....
Kind of silly to think that way, but it is akin to saying you do not use the garbage system.
I don't like the idea of my tax dollars being used to bomb the brown man either - but I do like the idea of trying to bring democracy to Afghanistan and perhaps stop the abuse of women's rights to education, voting, and choice of marriage over there.
That really boils down to the spin you put on it to be honest.
What I am trying to do here is put things into perspective.
Do I think governments waste our money? - YES - absolutely.
Am I a slave to taxes? - NO, I benefit greatly from a large amount of services provided with my taxes
Could the government do a better job at respecting peoples privacy and spending our money more wisely? - Yes, absolutely.
But it does not mean we live in a police state and have lost all our freedoms and are bent over to big brother.
If 4 or 5 people out 3.6 million have a bad day, but it prevents some brown guy with a rag on his head from crashing a giant airplane into a building killing thousands of people that year, then I say it is worth the risk.
I am heading on vacation on Saturday. I will have to go through all the airport bullshit to get there. All that hassle may do nothing to prevent a terrorist attack on my country - but what if it did. What if it stopped the guy behind me from getting on my plane and blowing it up? If some guy touching my junk looking for a bomb is going to potentially stop the guy behind me from blowing up the plane - touch all you want.

Yes, it really does boil down to the spin you put on to it.
Like me being a hypocrite if I drive on a public road.
There comes a point at which you have your limit and the cons for me participating in such a system outweighs the benefits I receive, such as the disproportionate amount of resources my country secures, or the amount of human life lost chasing boogey man terrorists.
I am concerned with more than just myself.
I am just being cautious. You loose nothing by being prepared and aware. If everything goes fine and life goes on, thats great; but I see this and it makes me angry.
TSA VIPR teams, walking around with machine guns in subway terminals. This is not Nazi Germany. I shouldnt have to show you my "papers."
Back to Rights, if we let them lapse, then this becomes normal.

I look at picture and think in this order:
1.) WTF, they use Golden retrievers for that now....
2.) They are looking for people with drugs and bombs - Thank god I didn't decide to pack drugs and bombs in my lunch today.
3.) They are going to shoot some mother fucker carry drugs or bombs today.
4.) What kind of gun is that anyway....
If they asked to see my identification - I would be like sure, I don't give a fuck.
The way I see it is; I loose absolutely nothing from those people outside that train. They may ask to see my ID, but so what. I have nothing to hide and they are just doing their job. No problem there unless I make one.
Could they possibly mistaken me for some terrorist? Possibly, but then I would be the 3 or 4 people out of 3.6 Million that are wrongfully detained. I am sure going to be fucking pissed, but I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery then that happening...

tank, that is what i am trying to say from begining: there are basically 2 groups of ppl saying
1. You have not to worry about anything if you are not hiding anything right? (I think they do not value privacy much or they simply just gave up in context of new faster world with many millions of ppl in it and consequences)
2. We know this obvious thing and it is trap, the thing is about my rights and officials are paid from my taxes to have respect for my rights and law! If I have right to not answer questions I may want to exercise them why would they be existent then, you know.
It is one thing that simple ppl are indoctrinated through movies and media that it is normal to tell police anything they ask you about. NO, IT IS NOT! Every lawyer would tell you to not tell anything to these ppl. It is fucking their job to investigate crimes, patrol etc. Ppl are led to somehow believe that officials are like your friends or something, lol. These officials hardly care for you, if it helps them they may even use or twist the information to use against you and your goodwill will fuck you up in the end (been there). You know statistics, motivation, salary is all that matters, and I dont blame them it is not their fault - just human behavior.
What are consequences of letting government to be ignorant and lazy? We have constitution here as well, as basic right is right to not tell anything to officials if it can be used against you or your family. Of course with advanced tech, cops became lazy, so they started using tech. Purchasing photo-radar-booths, installing them on purpose even on straight 4-lines roads with no danger at all and limiting speed to 30 mph, implementing processes to automatically extort money from you based on 1 photo. Of course some ppl got pissed off that policemen became lazy bastards only sitting in offices trying to pump additional money to country budget which was already robbed by corrupted politicians. So some simply refused to go to courts citing the constitutional law, all valid - police has to be there to catch you and then they can fine you, simply some photo of your car cannot be enough (you could have lend it to friend).
In 5 years (information wants to be free) some ppl started to point out this bastard of system on blogs. Immediately government started campaigns in mainstream media about so called pirates on roads and how they have invented new system / conspiracy plan to not pay any fines. And radars are good even on straight roads outside of cities - You know, even if it would safe one life! I kid you not they managed to convince 'majority' of ppl by twisting facts, that in fact everybody forget they intend to implement new law which shits on constitution and empowers them to not even question if you were there, if you are owner etc. - they just directly take your money from your employer or bank account with no court. And if you are arguing otherwise, you are automatically called some media buzzword like 'road-terrorist', extremist, wannabe rebel etc...
So I guess nowadays constitution has value of toilet paper anywhere.
Here we are again, you will say - where is the problem - ppl were speeding, they should pay up. It is about principles and rights and laws should be forced for both sides.

At what point does overreaching state power prompt you to say "no, you cant do that."
And on what basis? Is it morally? Financially?

btw on matter of bodyscanners, do you only troll smurf or did you actually see the images of these scanners yourself. It is quite 'pornografic' - you almost see naked body minus details like nipples etc. I personally would not care, but for women or famous I can imagine is quite dishonest and more importantly I see no value in this against terrorits (if i want i eat explosive or put in cavity, i die anyway no?)- I see it only as kind of 'boot-camp' for next generation of ppl to not object such behavior.
If you imagine your unborn children and you install cameras on them from day 1 in their life (room, dorm, gps tracking) , sure as hell they would think later it is normal and pass this experience to next gen.

My limit is when it reaches the inside of my home. That is my private sanctuary. As long as what I am doing in my home is not harming any other human being or putting a drain on public resources, then I should be left alone.
The moment I step into public, off my property, I am open to view and my actions can affect the people around me.
To answer your financial question: That is very difficult to answer. I don't think anyone can ever know the real number to that.
The first question you would have to answer is: what is the dollar value of a human life? When the world agrees o that number, then we can do a true financial analysis of the cost to reward ratio.
That is the problem with the whole argument about wasting money on security. It is a false argument until we know what the magic human value number is.
