Shit I'm pretty sure you could offer the guy a cup of coffee and he'd try to kill you with the mug if you forgot sugar.

That's like offering Beer to fuck the fat chick. It will work for a while, but it's not gonna last. Not only that, but there is zero motivation for the Fat chick to loose weight.

How do you play this types of games?

What draws you guys in?

From a person who has never seen or played this type of games before all i see is

1. Planets connected to eachother
2. Complicated management
3. Uncontrollable combat

You guys talk about how cool it is, i might buy it but i want to know whats the whole gameplay about plox.

im and old school gamer, but when i touch or even look at MOO im like WTF.
I thought Sins was okay. Cool as in I can play that game for 5 hours straight. Bad as in I just played 5 straight hours and lost and there is no story or point and it being space its RTS element is kind of simple.

I did like ascendancy back in the day.

MOO is the standard most 4x games go by, Sins is not really 4x, which was made it well.. an interesting concept but not so good.

The best thing I can describe it Demon if you haven't played MOO is that it is kind of like Civilization, if you've played that?

The gameplay revolves around Exploration early game and Research, as you try to find stronghold systems, lock down jump lanes and research technologies to give you a greater edge in the game.  There are 4 branches of Techs available (think like our Doctrine system) with many overlapping techs so you really can't go all crazy in one tech tree and expect to win.

For example if you go and get missiles in the WEAPONS tree, you might need to research a little in the INDUSTRY tree to discover the rare materials in the galaxy to actually make the weapons on your ships (if you've played Civ 4/5, that would be like playing Romans and needing Iron to build Legions).  Or you could rapid tech up the Diplomacy/Economy tech tree which not only helps Planet Infrastructure but lets you field larger fleets as their tree has the command cap increase and allows you to hire more leaders like Governors and Admirals.

Once a good portion of the galaxy is colonized, usually wars will start breaking out.  Based on your research, you can design all kinds of ships (you research the 'body' but outfit the ships with what you want).  For example it's perfectly viable to rely on small destroyers the whole game by maybe filling them to the brim with laser batteries and missiles, or rely on a few battleships that have 1-2 guns but are so loaded with armor they are tough to hurt or kill.  Heroes play a huge role in providing additional battle benefits (like passive bonuses to the fleets they lead as well as unique battle cards, more on that in a moment).

Battles are 60 second cinematic affairs that the fleets will fight it out based on their stats and bonuses and experience, to prevent the game from being bogged down in long, drawn out fights that is evident in other games.  The only player input is what strategy or 'battle card' you play in the phases.

Battles are 3 phases: Long Range, Medium, and Close/Melee
Missiles get damage bonuses at long, lasers at medium, and kinetics at short/melee

Example of cards is I can play 'Dust Warheads' to increase all my missile damage by 40%, but it can be countered by a sabotage card.
Sabotage Card may say something like 'Reduce enemy accuracy by 15%'

All cards will 'negate' one card type that's opposite them.  When you negate a card, your card is enhanced and the enemy card does not take effect.  If you don't cancel their card, both cards are considered active for the phase and your fleet slugs it out.  Battles can be all-or-nothing affairs or - depending on how you design your ship - can be stalemates or very slow battles, forcing the enemy to attack you many turns to remove your fleets and buying you time to send more help or more offensively minded ships.

Things really start getting crazy at the end as there is technology (if you pursue it) to leave the jump lanes to travel in the blackness of space, terraform worlds, and multiple end-game conditions.

Win by diplomacy (you and your allies left standing), economy (amass so much money that you essentially 'buy' everyone out), military (wiping everyone out), exploration/territory (colonizing 75% of the galaxy), science (research the 'last' techs in all trees), wonders (discovering and holding most of the 'Endless' artifacts in the universe) or score (combined of all the above).

It's very well done and a very pretty game, but if you prefer a more 'hands on' battle system like homeworld, this is NOT the game for you.  This is for galatic empire builders and pitting your strategy and playstyle against others (like Super Researches against Warlike Honorable Race against Borg-like machine guys who rape planets for resources, etc).

Multiplayer is great to be honest

Quick enough combat to make turns flow seamlessly (if one player isnt being a retard that is ;P)
