They'll think you're a communist, which they then associate with Stalinism as the prime example of why supposedly this communism is bad (despite the two being hardly related). Anyone with a bit of education on the matter would probably just stop at thinking you're a communist, without that immediately implying you support Stalin or the murder of millions of innocent people... Though since that's going to be a minority of people, you're better off not wearing it a on a shirt of course. (But maybe you Swedes are very sensitive to this, in Belgium no fucks would be given as it's okay to be a communist just as well)

I understand the difference and given Sweden is a very socialist country I think we understand what communism actually is better than most our fellows across the sea, but that does not change the fact that anyone that old enough during the cold war era will associate it with the Soviets, even while I personally know better the first thing I'd think of when seeing it is also Soviets, not for lack of education but simply because it's a striking example.

Fundamentally this is the exact same thing the Swastika has, it was not invented by the nazi's nor is it a sign pertaining specifically to them bu we simply attribute it to it's most striking historical relevance. It's really not all that different, we just hold one of them to an extreme higher than the other in certain countries and iirc the Hammer&Sickle is not fondly looked upon in certain countries because it brings up ugly memories, remind you of another sign?

Stalin was not the only ruthless communist dictator nor is he the only bad thing associated with communism.

uknown, you are every biased with your discussions of the Soviet Union / Russia. I am not saying this is a bad thing, it's a result of a vast knowledge of it's history.

That being said, the rest of the world knows what it knows, regardless of whether you think they are educated or not.

I would guess that the majority of the worlds population regards the hammer & Sickle as a symbol of the Russians & Stalin. The majority of the world regards the swastika as the Germans & Hitler.

Personally, I have always thought of the Germans/Hitler as a much more black part of history then Stalin.

That's mostly because Hitler lost and the iron curtain went up soon after. All you're given is the blanket "communism is bad, mkay." While the holocaust is showed down everyones throats for years on end in the american education system just about every other mass killing of the last few centuries goes unmentioned. Try to remember a time in school where the Armenian genocide is mentioned for more than two sentences. Now try to remember a school year where you didn't spend at the LEAST a few days talking about the holocaust how much of an asshole Hitler was. Hell, even the more recent genocide in south east asia with Pol Pot is glanced over because it didn't happen in Western Europe. Sad fact is if it ain't happening in western Europe most counties ain't going to bother going on and on about how awful it was. Back to Hitler and Stalin though, it is a bit sad that Hitler is thought to be the worse evil when Stalin is allowed to get away with his mass murder and on top of that proceed to subjugate eastern europe for a half century...

Where does Stalin get away with it though? He doesn't even in Russia, everybody here knows that he was terrible. It's not like with Leopold the second, now that is truly shameful. We even have statues for and streets named after the fucking guy, still today. And again, I don't think it's in anyone's interest to try and 'rank' these terrible people.

Where does Stalin get away with it though?

He gets away with it by not being viewed as the biggest asshole of World War II, that honor tends to be given to Hitler. Sure Hitler killed a lot of people, but Stalin killed just as many while also oppressing and lessening the lives of millions by forcing them into his communist ideas despite their clear opposition. He essentially enslaved pretty much all of Eastern Europe.

Everybody knows he's one of the worst dictators the world has ever seen, just because he's not the ultimate villain in WW2 doesn't mean he 'gets away with it'. Also, let's not forget about Mao Zedong, who ACTUALLY gets away with it to this day as Chinese people know nothing about his crimes. (With many still regarding him as the greatest leader)
