What are the best resources out there for information?
Dotafire has some stuff, but I've read through most of it.

Yea, just pick one of those highly rated builds ingame if you don't know what to build and watch comp streams. Everything else is just practice from there on.
(Last hitting, map awareness, knowing your role, ...) Though if you play pubs there's only so much you can weight in anyway, you end up heavily relying on what is essentially a game of russian roulette as to what type of teammates you get.

That's pretty much where I am right now, is trying to keep pub games from ending in disaster. I'm working on jungling but that's mostly just keeping an eye on the clock.
Right now I am primarily running Doom and Windrunner, they are my most played and most comfortable heroes.
I'm just looking for reading materials and some new ideas to run with.
Also, the last few games I have been running an Offlane solo Doom, it's been working ok (gold through last hits and devour) and then pushing when I get the level/gear advantage. Viable outside of pubs? Thoughts?

Best thing to so in pubs is play carry, ignore the qqing and farm like crazy. Then provided your teammates didn't fuck up too hard and you play your own game well you will be able to stomp an entire team. If carry isn't your thing, pick a mid with a strong ganking presence or a jungler like enigma who can really decide teamfights.
Don't get me wrong, wind is great fun, she's one of my fav but she can't make big of a difference in pubs, even if you build carry and win your lane. Dooms okay, but there's better carries

Alright, so far Doom has been pretty successful at shutting down key opposing heroes. That and I seem to mostly be initiating fights by tanking massive damage until my team does something. So far so good.
Yea, Windrunner is great with a competent team that takes advantage of her tether, but most pub games nobody wants to go in.
I'm just working on improving my game at the moment, and looking for heroes I enjoy playing.
Right now, it's mostly Doom, Wind, Bounty Hunter, Medusa (terrible, needs to much farm, but fun)

Tankdusa is still by far the most funny build ever. 2.5x health at will, anyone?

Oh yes, Medusa gets to full retard levels of tank. Which is fantastic, except for the farming time.

Problem with doom is he deals very little damage unless you get shittons of farm. Sure you can tank but you have no stuns and no way to force people to attack you. So yeah, you can silence one guy and initiate but from there on you are at the mercy of how well your team fights. Better off getting an annoying supporttank like abbadon.

Depends on whats going on, in pubs Quelling, Shield, tango since I never know where I am going to be, gives me good last hit and damage soak.
Depending on situation, Ring of Bass, or Ring of Regen, to maintain control/survive harrassment. Devoured creep varies on situation. Then to Vlad and Boots (Phase or Powertreads), then whatever is appropriate. Usually it's been Sange --> Halberd, Vanguard, AC/Shiva. Throw in other item depending on situations.
Shadowblade/Phase for ganking of that is what's needed. Otherwise, focus on survival, pushing, and damage.
My list of comfortable heroes is: Doom, Windrunner, BH, Bristle, Medusa. I'm going to work on expanding it and getting a couple good hard supports.

also, unknown is right, doom will never be a strong solo carry becuase the only way he scales into a higher combat role is by having an obscene amount of farm, dooming 1 person is great, but then you will just get kited to death by carries like drow and gyro, or flat out crushed by carries like lifestealer.
Now that doesnt mean that doom is a shit hero, he has a strong role as a semi carry, which is why people often pick him to carry the auras IE shivas, AC, Drums becuase hes godamn tanky and will survive long enough to put out the auras.

If you dominate your lane in pubs you could try and get Radi to carry, then after that AC or Shivas.

#1 rule of pro dota: don't buy a quelling blade for damage. Buy it for tree cutting or ward removal. If anyone sees you with a quelling blade he's gonna laugh at you.
