I watched the shoutcast, and must say I am intrigued at the style of gameplay. I did have a few questions though.

First off, I don't use ventrilo or other mic software. Is it easy to play and get into games without using teamspeak? Seems like a very Team oriented game, so I want to know if typing is aceptable or if everyone just chats.

Ventrilo is ripping our community apart? *falls down crying*

Anyway, one principle reason I prefer people to use vent is that its much, much, much easier to guide them through the process of setting up their first game. :|

tbh i dont mind ppl not on vent but i find it easier to communicate with ppl through vent and generally if there new and running squads into spawn arty u cant tell them fast enough 2 get the hell back also its annoying to find when setting up a game a "newb" joins which is fine then when we all ready up all in game we wait on the newb he isnt on the launcher and dosnt bother joining relic online its no problem to abandon just a waste of time

Brad, I can completely sympathize with that.  You need to tell them in the chat launcher to join Relic Online and go to the Multiplayer screen and wait for the game to be hosted.  As for spawn artillery, tell them before the game even starts... Wink

U want in?  U want to join our community? DL the ventirlo.

Its free, easy to set up, and you don't need a mic.. Even just listening is fine.

There is no reason not to and its not much to ask.

It is possible to play without a mic, and typing is acceptable.
However, having vent up to just listen is of great helpto everyone.

That's the kind of attitude that runs people of DBSights...  For Christs sake, it already takes a leap of faith for most people to even consider downloading the mod.  Asking them to download even more is just unfair...

Both sides set up pretty good arguments, but the questions remain:
1a) Why should the "newcomers" dl vent?
1b) Why shouldn't the "newbs" dl vent?

Its all about the beginning. We have always used Vent/TS to setup and then play games, we now have a launcher but, since we are used to hearing voices in the heat of battle, rather than reading, people don't see the need to change, and want to continue talking rather than typing. In a game like EiR typing, no matter how easy, can use up precious time, when trying to warn another player, or quickly change a tactic or target.

To be honest if someone can only just bring themselves to go through downloading this mod and set a up a division, and can't be bothered to go through the even easier process of downloading vent, i don't really think they should play. For those who really like and want to play EiR, they probably find the download of Vent a very minor task.

I may seem a bit harsh, but i do not believe the download of vent is a hard thing to do. This mod isn't for the sort of people that want to download it, install it, and start up a skirmish battle in minutes. Europe in Ruins is war, and a MMORTS, and like most MMOs the game isn't a quick plug and play thing. Due to this mod and its community using Vent/TS for so long, its hard to breakout of the habit, and we are all used to the ease of creating battles and playing them that Vent brings. This is a team game, and most people find it much easier to work as a team, when you know there are people there with you, and you can hear them fighting alongside you (hmm, Great Escape music just came on media player).

It's good to see that the newer people are also checking that everyone has vent, but this is due to all the old players being used to using vent. If the newer people are already taking over in that sense, then the people that come afterwards will also use vent. To me, it seems that this will continue, and vent will be a hard thing to lose.

Perhaps put a link to the ventrilo download in the thread with the launcher download?

Heck, you could even ask the vent guys if you could bundle vent with the launcher installer and give users the option to install both at the same time (similar to how many games bundle with gamespy arcade).
