I made a company, bought a bunch of guys for it, put them in platoons... now what? Is there some sort of lobby or something to get in a game? I read through the guide can't find anything. Do battles have to be pre-arranged? I tried launching the EiR launcher or whatever it is but it asks for a battle ID.

Make a battle with someone. Most common way is through IRC (chat link at top). Go into control panel, make a battle. Either use the launcher to download battle files, or download them manually and extract to COH. Go online, play game.

Where do I get the battle files and where do I go once I'm in-game in CoH to play it?

You must find someone that is online, looking in the IRC would probably be best, and challenge them by going into the War Control Panel, going to Battle, going to Initiate Battle, and then selecting who will attack and defend, and who will be playing. You then confirm, select how long of a delay each person gets coming in, and then confirm, confirm again, go back to the WCP, and select battle, go to Pending Battles, and then it will say the battle number. If you make the battle, broadcast the ID # to all of the players involved.
IF you're downloading it, try and use Phil's automatic downloader and updater found in the alpha testing section of the forums.
