My comp went down im looking at a 24-48 hr with no system, current assumption is its the power supply


here is situation, im decently smart with computers if you think you know what it is let me know

was over heating, graphic's card was showing artifacts (random trinagles all over the screen) opened up saw a layer of dust greater than when the Dinos died to that meteor went to wallmart to buy compressed air

opened a can of whoop-ass compressed air on the   inside of the system, hooked system back up, system wont turn on at all now, doesnt even go to POST, the light on the MOBO still comes on, so im thinking its most likely the button between the power supply and the MOBO or also possibly the power supply or MOBO it self

Dust = BAD!

Dust + Compressed Air = Dust flying all over

Its gets into things. Remove all cards and RAM, blow out system again including in the sockets. Plug back in all items, give it a shot. Dust likes to cause shorts on the board that will cause it to not do anything (Powersupply sees the short and will not turn on, this is good).

Should power up. If not, go back, remove cards and ram, go back through and put 1 DIMM in, try to boot. If it boots add the other, if it still boots add video card and see whats going on.

You can buy a PS tester for pretty damned cheap these days. Or you can go have it tested. I find that in most cases like this its the dust though. It gets into all those cracks and crevices when the pressure from the canned air is applied to it.

Get back to me when you get those steps done, and let me know whats going on.

If I r not mistaken, bad RAM will go BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP non-stop till you shut the fucker off. Doesn't sound like his problem.

Normally yes, but RAM DIMMs hate dust like no other, if that shit gets in the contacts it will cause a short as far as the PS is concerned. Its always best to add stuff back piece by piece to narrow down the issue.

You can go the Chaos route of. Computer broke, by new expensive one, discover all that was broke on old one is monitor, and then......well, what is he doing now?

your idea ampm why a good one failed, im thinking its the power supply but the one reason id think not is the MOBO is getting that one light, my friends locally are telling me that doesnt always mean the case, of course its also possibly the MOBO it self

Alright, so thats not the problem. It could be the power supply, do you have an extra? If not you can either buy a tester, pay to have it tested or do it yourself with a paperclip =)

Did it start up at all even with everything removed?

No it didnt start up

and ya i have 1-2 extra power supplys but if i recall they arent the 600 Watts i need

ya im bassically down to thinking its power supply first, the button to turn it on secound and the mobo\cpu third

the bad new's is under my giant heat sink i found a hair...

no idea how it got there


i did a test on the power supply even before my post but honestly im not sure i did it right and i returned my nehboors tester its too late now to go get it back

So if its not the PS, then you are really down to the board, or the button. I have no idea how you would break the button.

Don't count a short out of the running though. Check the board, make sure nothing is laying on it.

A. i havent ruled out the power supply i just have no way of testing it, its accually my #1 concern

2. i just have a FEELING its the button but i cant ACCESS it from inside the computer its hard to explain but on the front side of the computer there is a double lair the outside case and the inside case, its between thoese two

3. i hope its not the mobo\cpu or the entier system, otherwise im screwed

o and 4th and most important what exactly would be on the board?

could hairs cause a short? ive found 3 hair's in there so far, i think i got them all, 1 mine (somehow between the heatsink and outer CPU) and 2 dog hairs (between the case and the sound card curlled up)

No, no postion like that however i did find, Some adpter leading from the button to start the computer to the power supply's third prong is broken to the point the pong accually comes out

im now going under the assumption this is the problem

should be an easy fix

was the mobo had to drop 180 on a new one (got a warentty with it) but i lost the ability to SLI in the future


still have to install it wiating to get a hold of some friends, if that fails soon im going to try it my self

Don't worry about SLI, the cost vs effectiveness is crap, you do not get anywhere near a 100% increase.
