Ah Ha! Matt (my bro) doesn't have .Net framework 3.5, only 3.0, whereas I'm using 3.5. Could that be it?

For anyone having this problem, do two things.

1. Run this program...HERE

This will tell you if you have a bad .NET, XNA, or DirectX install.

I can report I have the very same error.

Having tried all this...

No result. The autoupdater will still make me unable to launch EiR at all.

It is mildly annoying as I had to leave from playing EiR(due to school) for a couple of month and was looking to get back thanks to the new version since I had enough free time for once, only to see myself locked out because of some error from the autoupdater.

Same problem here.

See the end of this message for details on invoking

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

For anyone having this problem, do two things.

1. Run this program...HERE

This will tell fix you if you have a bad .NET, XNA, or DirectX install.

2. If that program says you're good to go, download and install the Games for Windows Live Redist HERE

This helped Osprey and Rayze, hopefully works for everyone else as well.

I tried both, and sadly no results were concluding. However, it seems my answer might be in another thread because when starting the launcher instead of the auto-updater, the game tells me I downloaded the wrong version and needs to run the autoupdater(as others have reported).... at which point is where the autoupdater runs into its error preventing me from updating at all in the first place.

No dice for me either Ludovsky, but mine is the updater because it gets stuck at telling me I have 119 files to download. I click update it does nothing except for actually move the progress bar a bit and the progress bar moves every once in a while, but its not actually downloading anything because I played Half-Life 2: Deathmatch with no decrease in performance. I click update again and the updater gets a little weird, it looks like it tries to refresh, but doesn't refresh fully as it has blank white spots on it. I click update again and the error pops up. Thats just what typically happens, but it doesn't do that crap in the same order. Sometimes it will error at the start, or sometimes it won't error but just lock up, sometimes it will keep acting like its downloading something something, or sometimes it will say everything is up to date and downloaded, so I click Launch and it errors.

Is there someplace I can manually download those 119 files? Maybe it will work if I do that? I'm lost here...

Stupid OF, screwed up CoH and now has screwed up EiR(for me atleast cuz I can't play it... :/)...

I have the same problem.
I have followed all your steps.
1. Run this program...HERE

2. If that program says you're good to go, download and install the Games for Windows Live Redist HERE

I have also reloaded the lastest setup and updater.
My updater says all files up to date, but crashes when I click Launch

I just want to cry........

UAC off, run as administrator, firewall access...  Check those things first.

You also may need to run this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

Direct X web installer - run this even if the xnari.exe says Directx is up to date.
