got to the second screen, well third actually, the one with the spikes, and i can't get past it.

Yeah the third screen (bed of spikes at the bottom) seems impossible to me.

I guess its mostly trial and error

I got about 1/8 of the way into the game before I gave up. Beat up Mike Tyson and then ran into the ghosts and ghouls level where I got stomp by apples and spikes of doom.
