Rangers are the key to my current build, I am running a Cohesion build. I try never to be with out 2 rangers on the field. I often start with 2 rangers, sometimes 2 smgs, sometimes one, sometimes none, some times with rifles, some times with pure support. they are the most versatile unit in the game imo.
Some things i didn't see post through out the thread are actual in game tactics: I often try to be real subtle when attacking with rangers vs tigers and P4s, I often use a rifle to draw fire then circle my rangers around the side or back the out of line of sight of my opponents troop that the tank is supporting, I will fire up and split my rangers to both sides of the tank so that I never face full front armor with both squads.
Rangers in buildings can fight against huge numbers for a very long time , so long I have been amazed on occasion. They are also extremely accurate with their zooks from building windows.
Do you guys ever need to get a tank to turn a little for that nice rear ATG shot, try use a ranger squad as a distraction, make it look like your trying to circle around, I always et good results with this if I do it while I am at long range from Infantry and tanks, even if the tank wont turn for me it will back up just a little and give me that little bit of ground.
I will use 1 squad for a wild goose chase, I will let my enemy see me run one squad through a whole in the line some where on big maps, and just roam the back fields with it, or park it some where hard to find for a while. No one in their right mind wants a loose ranger squad in the back Field hunting. They will hunt it down weakening the front line, or pay for it later.
I will and do often sacrifice two ranger squads for one pak gun destroyed or in allied hands. 2 rangers=456 MP +160 Muns- can be effective till wounded then just eat pop( the price for my reduced rangers is 228MP each) Pak=450 MP + 190 Muns- can rape your whole team the whole game
I use rangers in 3 ways.
1. In mass, @ 35 pop i will often field 5 squads. With this I alpha zook any armor on the field(except Kts), including tigers if I circle them. Cause 50% damage to front armor of stugs and stuhs, and leave p4s cripled in one volley. Out infantry any thing except massed lmgs.
2. In pairs or triplets with smgs and nades. They will beat KCH hands down. I often fire up through the front line of troops with 3 squads, run behind the HMG , kill the hmg and mortar in support then take out the front line troops, out of 18 members I will usually only lose three, if I evaluate it well. This is often so effective I get a free mortar and HMG out of for one rifle squad.
3. The anti tank roll for rangers I think is the hardest for me. I will have at least one squad following an infantry push back far enough not to be seen by any troops they run into supporting the tank I am after. I will look for some where I can circle around and pop some shots on the tank, I never try to do this from the front, it is almost always very ineffective. I have found I can do this on narrow maps, wide maps, crowed high pop caps battles, any where really as long as I am patient and careful in the hunt. Don't underestimate the zook, it causes huge damage on all tanks, even the KT if it can get some rear shots off.
Note: I run enough rangers that I have a few to spare, I have over 10 less than 20, some of these tactics I use are because of the number of units I have and are not viable for all infantry company builds due to rangers costing so much.
