Hi!
« on: August 18, 2007, 08:39:14 am »

Hi,
Im new 2 the EiR scene but have been playing CoH for a while now with about 5 members of my clan (TheEdge). I thought i would give EiR a try as i liked the pre-purchase idea and it reminded me a bit of the Close Combat games!.
Im still trying 2 workout the basics of EiR so if any1 has any hints and tips then that would b cool!.
Hope this will be fun!.

Thanks

Welcome.  My only suggestion is get TeamSpeak even if you don't have a mic.  No other way to setup games at the moment.

Yeah we use TS anyway so thats no prob.
Couple of questions: Do the maps get pre-chosen or do u just choose ingame?. Do u use custom maps or just standard maps?. Is there a map of europe that gets updated 2 show who is winning the 'war'?.

You choose maps ingame, you can use any map.  There's no map of europe yet, but there will be...eventually.  For now there's just a territory ticker.

Ah ok cool so eventually there will be a map divided by provinces and there will be a map for the control of each province or will it work differently?.

Except Faltnor. Don't ask him anything.

And if you go Axis, watch out for Duckordie, he likes to TK tanks.

atleast give the guy some usefull information.

The biggest thing I tell new players ( and i have helped a lot ) is your squad make up/ force composition will be your biggest hurdle.

firstly axis start at 24 in game pop cap, allies start at 30, you want to make squads equal to that in combination for start.  I do not recommend making 1 30 pop squad for allies or 1 24 for axis..

for allies(lets just use that as an example) make a 12 pop starting platoon in your core and another 18 pop cap starting platoon.  while at this make another 12 pop cap starting platoon in your core as a potential alternate entry.

I generally will make a HMG/MORTAR 12 pop, a 2 rifleman/1 engineer 18 pop cap and a 2 rifleman with stickies 12 pop cap alternation, or even put a tank in the second 12 pop cap group or a jeep and m8 for a 11 popcap.

the reason you don't want to go 30 is for the ability to react when attacking.  30 for defense is fine, but attacking you want to be able to have options for your starting positions.

secondly vary your squads in size for early to late game.

ie early game you want 9-12 pop cap groups, your AT gun and rifles will give you a 10 pop cap, a mortar and a motorbike will give you a 9 pop cap.. 2 rifle squads give you a 12.  make a few smaller squads to refill tight fit popcaps and full refill early game popcaps.

Generally speaking you also want a few 18 , 24, and maybe even 1 30 pop cap platoon.  These save you the spawn timer (everytime you call a platoon on the field you get a longer spawn timer till the next one is available, so calling in 12 man squads all game REALLY hinders your ability to react by late game)  late game when you have 50-60 population total you want to be able to call in a 30 pop cap rifle group and a 12 pop cap tank right after each other instead of 3 12 pop cap riflemen and a 12 pop cap tank.

vary up your squads, make em as diverse and useful as possible and enjoy the learning curve , starting out you almost always have to erase your company and start over after the first few games, don't get discouraged.

Lmao, that was funny Wink.  Was like the worst friendly fire incident EVER.

As Tkaudi/Salan said, don't get discouraged too fast here. There are often very frustrating technical issues, balance issues (it is still beta/alpha) and many other problems that arise. The game is also tougher than vanilla CoH in terms of micromanagement and in purchasing strategies with regards to buying units and selecting doctrine abilities. As everyone said, don't be afraid to ask people for help, we're all glad to get a new player for EiR.

I'm gonna have to ask: what did Duckordie do?

On the first real game of industrial heartland, apex's vet 3 tiger was backed into a corner as it was being rushed by allied armor. Duck Or Dies' panzer 4 did the honors and blew the engine up on it while shooting at tanks nearby, then failed to kill the m10 which rushed the tiger from behind, killing it. After that, it died.

ok, back to the topic of this thread. Welcome to EIR! You'll find it is much better than vCOH. I can't even touch vCOH now that I play EIR (what are these buildings for?) Anyways, have fun and see you in game.
