It's a free trading game using data from the real world stock market, you play with monopoly money, but everything else is the same as the real world.

A few people from another forum and a couple of guys I know are playing it, some of us are also trading with real money.  It's actually pretty fun, especially in this time of volatility and economic recovery.  You can put in as much or as little effort as you'd like.  Some people just sit there and collect interest, while others make a large amount of intra-day trades.

We just started a new round if anybody's interested in joining.

http://vse.marketwatch.com/Game/Homepage.aspx

Here's the quick guide:

Register on the website with your screen name

Join the game via this link http://vse.marketwatch.com/Game/StartViewGame.aspx?id=Scrapheap2010

The password is "clamdong"

You start with $100,000

Look up the ticker for stocks and ETFs here:
http://www.google.com/finance

Build a portfolio and share your advice or disasters.

You have three months, game starts on may 5th and ends on August 5th.

Market orders have a 15 minute execution delay.

Signed up, made some uninformed investments. Trading hours suck a little, but it looks pretty exciting. Always wanted to see how it works.

You can, almost all major national companies trade on the NYSE/Nasdaq.

For example, the National Bank of Greece (NBG).  They were trading at around 8 dollars in october of last year.  It is now at $3.

I did something identicle to this in Grade 10. we started with 10K cash each I ended the exercise with over $400K in profits and my teacher told me I cheated. (still not sure how, either way me and her were oil and water and she took a disability leave the following year.)

what does 'Sell Short' and 'Buy to Cover' mean?

When you sell short you sell stocks don't you don't own. You effectively 'borrow' them from someone who owns them. When the price of those shares drops, you 'buy to cover', or effectively pay for what you sold at the new price.

Example; you short sell 1 BA share for $5 hoping it will drop. An hour later it's worth $3, at which point you pay for that 1 BA share at the current price (not at $5 you were short selling it for)and get $2 of the difference for yourself.

I think that's how it work, anyway. I'm not sure.
