Don't you think there's a way to balance it instead of saying "well you're just screwed if you play on a small map"? SR may be ok on big maps, but it's clearly not ok across the board

The problem with strafe is due to the delivery mechanic of it, its a plane with 500 range that starts shooting when it gets in range. Coming from the long side on a 2v2 map it can fire before smoke hits the ground....obviously a problem, inversely it can come down from the short end of a 4v4 map and it would be impossible to not avoid it. Honestly I cant think of a quick fix to the ability, its a fundamental problem.

The smoke doesn't even help on small maps (Gold Sector, Nuenen, etc) because the flipping bullets hit you way before the plane shows up on the field.  If the plane showed up earlier and you could see in which direction it is traveling then you could dodge strafing runs a lot easier.

The only way to truly balance the plane mechanic would be to have the actual abilities change depending on the size of the map, however looking at the rgd's I really cant see how this could be done, furthermore its a lot of effort and quite frankly isnt worth it. Strafe should atleast cause friendly fire, all other offmaps do.

you can make the plane spawn from the longest end of the map.

the only problem is that strafes become absolutely useless in 3vs3 and up maps. Dodging it becomes too easy b/c you know which way to move and the delay is long enough to do it. There is no guesswork.

It also doesnt remove the fact that the plane will take twice as long to reach its target on a 4v4 as compared to a 2v2. TBH i think the ability is impossible to properly balance in its current state, and we are left with two real choices.

a) we keep the cool plane, and except the minor balance issues that come with it

b) we aim for pure balance over coolness and standardize all offmaps.

maybe shorten the range of it? Because if you do say, 100 range, it still has a good chance to hit. Just have it come in from above like the new Napalm strike instead of from off map.

or make the range longer.

so if u call it in wrong, it will hardly shoot.

I remember once in the old Relic beta having the strafe plane enter the map on an dive, strafe the area and pull out of the dive to fly off map.

If the range of the strafe effects the amount of shots fired, cant we affect the trajectory of the plane to compensate?

Quit fucking around with strafe, it should have stayed the same as vcoh, if you cant see a plane on the minimap going towards you then you deserve to lose your units. Maybe the v1 should have smoke too!

Two - that's the entire point of the thread. Your units get strafed, then smoke drops, and only then the plane comes on the minimap - which is the core problem with strafing runs.

i dont really care if i cant evade it, quite realistic: it's not like you could dodge an airplane coming straight for you.

the random dmg it the thing that bothers me. it should mostly pin infantry, and dmg only a bit.

The current strafe on vcoh you can see the plane before it arrive unless on a really small map like france coming from teh side.
