Im looking at my doctrine selections right now and debating how to play my defensive Wehr army.  I was set on getting an 88 but i saw how terribly one performed when Arty spam was on the field.  Ive already STARTED going that doctrine direction with officer but i also got advanced warning for my infantry.  So how should i go about it, and is it even worth it.

I know allies throw a lotta manpower in trying to destroy one, so a well protected flak may do well, however with arty on field it will just blow up and die.  So im torn!!

So you're torn about getting a unit because you saw one getting raped when it's natural hard counter was fielded? Don't be ridiculous ;P.

The 88 is pure awesome - get one and love it forever.

haha well seen it mutiple times.. Either rushed, bombed, or spammed.  I love the 88 just needed to get some opinions. LOL i also just looked at the leaderboards for the 88s compared to howies.  Howie 1064 (approx.) and Flak88 46?! LOL.

O p.s how much range does the flak 88 arty barrage have?

always have units to scout ahead, as soon as the 88 is on your front line is exactly the time when you lose it.

1atg can take down an 88.

Only if the 88 is shooting something else, and not the ATG Tongue.

88 barrage has 105 metres range(it normally has 100 range in direct-fire mode) - and it's quite enough for taking out enemy blobs and mortars Wink. I've even killed a vetted cromwell at max range over a forest in one barrage once - was pretty funny.

only on the  top tree you need the t1 to buy the t2, need t2 buy t3 etc.
in the bottom tree you can buy 2 t3s and 1 t2 without having any t1s.
you can notice it coz there are no arrows.

If people know that you have 88 they want a map full of hedgerows. End of Story

88 is shit. I build a 25 pop support for it and 2 ab squads can drop in behind(not on top, out of sight) walk up, couple of RRs, fireup away. weeee.

Your support OR micro must suck very bad for that to happen

The Flak 88 can be a very powerful unit to have, but is very limited in larger games. Its hard counter is one shared by the entire doctrine. On-Map artillery will turn the Flak and whatever support it has into craters. There is little you can do about this.

My advice if you want your Flak to actually gain some vet? Get Omniscience so your Flak can spot ATGs for itself and kill mortars. Then get Military Intelligence and Rocket Artillery. Though the spread is generally horrible and your first instinct will be to use it on blobs or that repairing Pershing to justify the SP cost for the second use, realize that it has a higher purpose. Screw all the other doctrine unlocks because they're worthless.

This purpose I mentioned is bringing genocide to every howitzer, priest, or calliope that comes on the field. While not a guaranteed kill by any means (from empirical use, about 66% success rate), its the best shot you have. You'll also have a chance at defeating arty spam if you play with a partner who has additional off maps like V1 or precision strike.

Look at it this way. You'll be doing your opponents a favor by making them rely on things like skill, strategy, and good micro to defeat you rather than vet-whored I-win buttons. Truly a win-win situation for everyone.

You would also be excusing yourself from the need of more micro or skill since you have the long-range piece on field.  Roll Eyes

Oh absolutely, no skill involved at all in Flak placement, gun rotation, or timing its deployment. Truly a weapon of the skill-less and otherwise inept. [/sarcasm]

Sure, a Flak can do well enough sitting around, but the amount of micro involved to keep it alive can be easily on par with using something besides artillery to destroy it.

Flak 88s show their true micro-ability potential once you need to shoot something that's behind a tree grove.

flak 88 are a great way to lure airborne into a trap lol. I had two on my last game and it got dropped on by airborne on both sides of the field, it was ridiculous.

Dafuq man, don't ask for proof if you'll refuse it if it's not in your favor, logic fallacy for the bloody win.
