They are a good idea and a bad idea, it all depends on how your strategy works out. You will want to be conservative with the start as its alot of resources to waste if it dies to quickly but holding it back too much will just make it a crippling aspect to your entire team. While the shock of having that much fire power on the field could shock your opponent and help you crush their start.

if you want to do a tiger start, I suggest doing it with 3 flame pios (with goliaths) and a bike to scout.

should be able to handle pretty much anything.

and groundfire's start that he just suggested would have absolutely no problem VS a brit start, 3 flame pios would eat any bren squads up and goliaths to either flank around or ambush would work well on taking out the support, then the tiger mops up.

Tiger + 2 flame pio + assault nade squad. Tiger starts can work by their own merit. Pershing starts pretty much rely on your opponent being caught unaware (which might well happen because no one starts with a Pershing).

Tiger + Pak + 2 Pios with flamers and Goliaths is what I've used. Need another piece of AT against stuff like T17s.

I haven't seen T17s since you can request to remove doctrine abilities.

there are no good pershing starts.
been trying every time i play eir.
most effective is a pershing start in 3v3. the enemy at moves generally towards it and it can help free up flanks. works best with ht infantry or roos because a vehicle sandwitch doesnt work well vs handheld AT and tanks.

but i always played with 6 pershings (2 repairs on each) so i could afford to let it get beat up and distarct the enemy. but it doesnt distract 17 pop of enemy units.

Start callin:
Pershing (17) Jeep (3) riflemen with bar/sticky (5)

jeep is scouting so you can see a lot. I had a vet 2 jeep for this so it gave insane recon. (basic+10sight)*1.4

I used to love Pershing starts. I'd have two Pershings and if u can keep your 1st persh on the field long enough, you'd cause the enemy to sacrifice a lot of AT and heavy anti tank just to kill that Pershing

Persh = 16 Pop 3 flame engies with mines works pretty well, that was my start. Actually, that's pretty much what i used was 3 flame engies with mines + the persh. It really works best if u have the t2 that gives it faster speed otherwise you can get caught up pretty easily.

Cost too much pool and muni for pios.
And what happens when it takes on a firefly start.

If 10 millon fireflies,
blows up some Tiger ass...

That start is so solid if you know how to use it, i've seen it, thoose resources are worth it cause the tiger and thoose pios if lucky can survive really long ingame..

...And that's just the start callin.

Don't forget about the goliaths. Those can really do a number on a firefly (either catching him off-guard or if pathing fails your opponent for one second)

lets not forget put it in light cover and it becomes a mine that can wipe out a squad

Depends on the enemy. If you know they have a doctrine not suited to counter you right away, you may try. It also depends on the size of the game. In a 1 vs 1 a Tiger start can end badly, if the enemy has way better micro than you. In a 4 vs 4 your Tiger/Pershing will have to act as the support to your allies, rather than a force capable of capping forward.

In smaller games a Tiger can become immobilised and nobody will come to help it, due to stickies or Brens. In larger games the Tiger can run into a well placed ambush, if not enough scouting is done.

Overall it only depends on the circumstances. Reliable teammates, and if you are reliable yourself means a Tiger/Pershing start will work out fine. If you are alone though, it might end very quickly.
