Mount and Blade itself isn't too good a game, but it has a massive mod base, so the game never really tends to get old. It's a slow paced game, you'll find yourself running from town to town at the beginning when building an army, and then eventually you'll find yourself back in the same situation when you lose battles. I'd highly recommend it though, it gets addictive really quickly!

Im gonna say the Kingdom Management mods are the best out there for M&B as they add the most to the game.
One of my fav mods was ww2 china

I played this game a while ago for some time. Quite fun, but the learning curve is frustratingly hard given the total lack of direction or a manual.
Also knowing how to actually use half of the weapons in the game gives me a bit of a mental tic every time something goes horribly hollywood.

Akranadas' Greatest Hits, Volume 1: Vet has nothing to do with unit preformance. We are serious about enforcing this, and I am sure you all want to be able to have your balance thought considered by the development team with some biased, sensationalist coming into your thread and ruining it.

You start as Joe Nobody with a bow a sword a shield and a horse and go do whatever you want. Some notable goals are: Get filthy rich (achievable via trade, looting, pillaging, ransom, actual quests, etc.), become a mercenary, become a feudal lord, get an exiled king back on the throne, become your own king of your own kingdom with your own lords. Fight lots of dudes, siege some places, you know.

The single player gives a good account of itself as far as Managing your own kingdom, but it's essentially the same thing over and over. It is entertaining though.
The mutiplayer is incredibly difficult as the Skill differences between most players and great players is clearly apparent.

You grind.. gain persistent gains to become better.. and then ultimately you are kind of crowned king.. but there still are other kings to fight?
Which also used to be peasants?
So its EIRR with horses?

It's actually not that grindy, really. Unless "killing shit tons of people" is grindy, in which case yes, to get anywhere it is quite grindy. But in that regard one could say first person shooters are grindy by their very nature :p

I play it with a difficulty rating of 87% and it's facking hard man, If i screw up once in battle or if some guy pegs my horse with a Javelin thats usually it. my horse dies from under me and i go crashing into the ground surrounded by pissed of people
Even when I fight peasants I have to be on top of my game. It's gotten to the point where I don;t fight the Khergits(mongol type faction) because everyone in their army throws some type of weapon.
and Crossbow heavy Rhodoks can be just as deadly due to the armour penetration values of Crossbows. I can shrug of archers sometimes with my armour but crossbows slice it like butter

Yeah, crossbowmen and javelins (FUCKING JAVELINS) are my biggest fear, really, because just a single shot from one or the other can knock you right the hell out making a shield totally mandatory. That's a place it falls short on realism that I wish it didn't, but I guess it's there for gameplay reasons.

Javelins should make shields useless...and crossbows did go through armor. Then again, so do longbows.

Then again, not very well to either, and certainly not very well from far away. But javelins are significantly worse because they absolutely murder people like armor piercing shells necessitating a shield (which, in turn, is oddly effective against javelins).

I think the biggest issue in games like these is mixing weapons and armors from different periods and trying to make them all useful.

Well, that too. Trying to mix and match sword and shield with plate armor and two handed hammer realistically wouldn't end well so they start making all kinds of funky concessions for the sake of game balance.

Indeed, like the use of the bastard sword family of weapons pre-plate.

Why don't you just join the Khergits and ally with the Rhodoks? It's win from the get-go, assuming you know how to control an army of ranged units!
