Injuring the enemy soldier is always preferable to killing them - if they make it out of the battlefield, the enemy state still has to care for him, while not being able to send him to any war-like labour. That not only ties down resources, but also manpower that could have instead been used on the frontline (directly or indirectly).
Not only that - it's far easier to demoralise the enemy citizenry by having massive ammounts of people in wheelchairs or whatever roaming the streets than by having dead people so far away they won't ever see it. Direct confrontation with the horrors of war is always more shocking than hearing that "Aunt Mary's son" got killed.

As for wounded being better then dead, well it depends on your enemy. As a wounded enemy can still kill you. Throw in drugs... well blow off a foot, and he will still be coming

What are you talking about, US Rounds tumble on impact, those things are nasty and may not even exit anywhere near where they entered.
Not sure if your rounds differ in Canada much, but the 5.56 we use is causes some really nasty wounds.
Troof. I used to hate the 5.56 and thought we should change to a 7.62 rifle. Buttt, after firing the M16 more times than i care to count, I <3 it. So accurate. The recoil is like shooting a BB gun on steroids, but it does some damage on the other end. Hurts real good. It's loud though.

I definitely like the precision offered by my 5.56mm C7. I was intensely interested in ammunition types and performance and the 5.56 has several deficiencies. namely that there is no relaible yawing or fragmentation with the round. In most cases the distance your firing does not allow the bullet to maintain the minimum velocity for fragmentation. Additionally due to it's size the effects of Cavitation and Hydrostatic shock are severly reduced. It's still a good round, the best? No, the 5.56mm round was rushed into standardized service during the cold war and that was deemed more important then finding the right round. As with most things there is always room for improvement.
