I prefer to play in sunny weather, and pretty much play sunny games exclusively. I don't mind having the option to play rainy games, so long as everyone in the game agrees to it. The problem comes with players like WildZontar, who is so patently obnoxious in his demand to play rainy games that it really starts to grind on one's nerves.
Rain does reduce your performance, and is distracting in a lot of ways. I'd rather concentrate on playing the game + having good performance, rather than playing a rainy game 'because it's cool.'

I say flat-out no to snow, though, as most people seem to think snow = bloom, and that just makes maps unplayable.

In the end, I'd rather have our mappers creating new maps, rather than editing our current ones to add in rain. If you want something new, demand a new map, not some atmosphere settings.

Sorry that I beg you and others to play with rain on and the such  Undecided I feel as if  I've played so many games now where it's always sunny and bright/night time. I just want something completely different, and since EIR is one of the few games(or mods) that I have played recently that has implemented rain into some of their maps, it's just what I always want. But I guess I can't always have what I want  Tongue

Honestly, it really all comes down to personal preference when it comes to the atmosphere of the map, I, myself like rain/fog as the atmosphere as I rarely see it in games as well as it makes the game more enjoyable for myself. While people like yourself prefer sunny and bright atmospheres as its easier to see and has a somewhat better performance for the players.

I'm sorry, but you can't even begin to compare editing a map to have more weather options to creating a new map entirely. It's not one instead of the other. If you're interested in making a new map, you make a new map, and changing weather options on your older map does not affect this or take much time at all away.

And stating "rain DOES reduce performance" does nothing, as does "rain is perfectly okay for performance". I personally lean towards the perfectly okay side, since I have no noticeable FPS difference on the same map with rain on/off, but just saying that is nothing. One side or the other should get solid evidence that weather affects performance, and not state it is a fact until then.

I don't know how you find rain distracting... but I'm not you, so whatever.

rain does impact on performance as having a bucket load of new objects to load and animate every second..
Personally my pc can handle it but it seems their are those that cant..
In that i say we will just have to play maps without those effects in games with them , so the game is atleast playable
BUt hey hit me up for a stormy/fog map anytime

Except they're not objects, even from a coding perspective. It's a visual effect, not loading up anything that can be interacted with. Maybe if it were creating and then destroying 800 infantry per second...

its a proven fact that some older graphics cards do have trouble processing rain, its been an issue in CoH since like 2006

Saying it's a proven fact and proving a fact are two entirely different things. Observe:

It is a proven fact that all graphics cards capable of playing CoH have absolutely zero trouble with rain. It's never been an issue with CoH.

People with older graphics cards should not be playing CoH in the first place.

I doubt many people still use nVidia GeForce 6200s and 7300LEs, which they did back in those days... I'm enjoying a puny little Ati M4250 at the moment - and it runs rain just fine. Rain is nothing more than an overlay done in 3D : the droplets aren't actually objects.

Now the Scorched Earth Lag offmap, however, is a whole different story...

I'm not saying that adding some settings is as much work as making a new map. I am saying if you want new and varied gameplay, you should ask for new maps, not just new settings.

IDK why you seem to be fighting this so much, but it's pretty common knowledge that rain effects affect performance to some degree (more on some systems, less on others). There's a reason changing rain detail settings affects the 'performance' slider in the options menu, a reason rain was removed from some automatch maps, and a reason rain isn't even an option anymore in CoH:O.

A different atmosphere, constant white noise over unit (and other in-game) sounds, lightning causing the screen to flash, and a much darker screen in general.

Saying it's a proven fact and proving a fact are two entirely different things. Observe:
never been an issue with CoH.
Are you just really dense or what? Have you actually never heard anyone complain about rain-induced lag or setting issues before?

CoH came out in 2006, so you could reasonably expect someone to be running fairly old graphics cards.

Weather options make the game more enjoyable for those who use them, there is no reason you can't have both new maps and weather options on existing maps for an improved experience. Asking mappers to make maps does nothing, because they will do it anyways if they have the time and interest, whereas the same cannot be said for adding weather options to their maps.

There's your solid evidence towards rain affecting performance, good job.

Lightning may cause distractions, I'll give you that, but a different atmosphere and a darker screen are not distractions. You might find it harder to see but that's not what a distraction is.

I'm going to miss my epic napalm Sad it's currently the prettiest ability in the game by a huge margin, although I can understand toning it down.

Armada, a solution's not that simple, because that would drastically change the balance of it.

I am really surprised that no one has so far refered to the option to completely disable rain via the ingame (COH grafics) options...  Huh

So adding more weather/atmosphere options is viable and also whoever doesn't like it or can't handle it, can simply disable that via the options menu in CoH.

Hmm, i don't see why anyone would disagree with rain as it is a choice we pick when we select our map.

I'd say it would be cool yeah. Wink
