Compatibility.
Open Office can only open/make Open Office documents and these are incompatible with other programs. Microsoft Office also has more and better features.

I used open office a few times and I could open, edit and save microsoft office files without a problem.

problem is, all business world seems to be entrenched in Office, they insist you must be able to have revisions, templates, embeded other MS shit and so on all in  MS own weird mix of proprieritary interconnected useless junk

Right. I've write a 40 page bulletin and my Prof. coudn't open it (Without any errors) because he used Microsoft Office.  Lips sealed

yes, because open office can open&save projects as every single file type out there and Microsoft office can only open one specific file type its openoffice's fault.

Correction, he couldn't open it because you forgot to go to save as and choose Word document.

Open Office is the best
