Today at uni me and my mates got together in a (relatively) empty computer lab, and decided to have a couple of BIG 4v4s!  The first we played was on French Countryside, which we all agreed was fantastic.

By the time we were ready for our second game, however, we had ten people lined up ready to play.  This caused problems, for obvious reasons, but then Communazi (an Axis player) had a fantastic Idea.

"Gunt! I just had a fantastic idea!  We don't play! But, I command my Axis horde [the 4 other axis players on one side of the room], and you command your allied horde! [On the other side of the room]."

All the players agreed, the noobs because they had no idea what was going on, and the the veterans because they knew the value of command and control.

What ensued was one of the most fantastic games I've ever experienced, and I wasn't even playing! I was just flitting from PC to PC saying commandery things like "Reinforce that flank, and I'll have Kremlin bring up his sherman for support," or "Keep that howitzer firing! Every shell you can muster, and keep them coming!" or "FOR FUCK SAKE, DON'T TURN YOUR REAR TOWARDS THAT PANTHER!!!"

And I enjoyed every last minute of it.  We Allies ended up winning, but Communazi said he also enjoyed commanding, and I dare say that I would have enjoyed it even if I lost.

And THAT got me thinking.  If only there was a way of executing command and control in online games?  Company of Heroes really needs a team spectator position.

9 times out of 10, successful command and control is the difference between victory and defeat.

It gets done often in LAN parties, etc aswell.

It would also be possibly if you somehow had live battle stream.

A barely used system implemented by valve that allows an unspecified number of people to observe games of CSS or DoDS without taking up player slots.

If there was a way of adding player slots to a company of heroes game, then you could just have a 5v5, with one player on each side taking only one Engineer unit, and not bringing it on to the field.  All he would do is sit there in TS and yell orders.

BUT if you could add player slots to a company of heroes game, then people would play alot of 5v5s, and 6v6s... oh my god that would be epic.

However, I understand that this is impossible.

the temp.rec file isn't created until after the game has finished. Relic changed it to decrease the load that CoH was producing on some systems

Darn. Pity there is no way to statistically measure leadership.

Perhaps we should yell at Relic.

Yes. temp.rec isn't created until after the game finishes, but something must have been running during the game to chart all the information.

This is one reason why EiR would be improved immensely if there was a dedicated commander.

When the game goes into a frenzy and you're busy microing all your men, it really helps to have a commander giving you clear instructions. If this could somehow be implemented, it'll make EIR 25% better and 50% more unique.

I thought I heard that an observer mode was a feature they are including in OF.  If so, then obviously we could implement this quite easily.
