Ah, so they've updated the official disaster Area? I haven't checked since yesterday morning. At any rate, ouch. I'm just glad all my known friends/relatives in QLD are too far north to have been affected.

@Malgoroth
I like it how FEMA takes the wrap for everything, its an organization meant to respond to a disaster... you dont send all your resources only to have them destroyed during the disaster and now you have to save even more people... the people that were meant to be rescuing those in need. Not to mention how screwed up the response of the local government was... one of the governors literally did NOTHING. What do you expect FEMA to do when people build their houses below sea level next to the Gulf of Mexico? When people refuse to leave during a forced evacuation What do they expect? Not to mention the individual states infrastructure was so god damn old... Furthermore most of the trailers FEMA provides for assistance about 1/2 a million were being used in Florida as people from several years earlier were still using them from previous hurricanes... try evicting 500,000 people... doesnt happen very easily especially in America where everything has to go through beauricratic crap and everything thinks they deserve something for free.

Your totally right. The government agency tasked with responding to disasters (its reason for existing at all) should be totally left off the hook.
/sarcasm
Katrina was fuckin' embarrassing and the blame lies with the government. That includes the agency responsible for emergency response. Perhaps if it had a more capable person running it... or if its focus wasn't shifted from natural disaster response to terrorist threats....

Heh, its probably the best responsive organization out there aside from the military, for the area it responds to... you cant let someone off the hook for something they shouldnt be on the hook, for they're a response agency, everyone expects them to prevent the disaster, like anyone could... and the aftermath if you ask me, is mainly the fault of the individual state governments, they had no organization or communication in how to respond. FEMA had to organize them in order to start any effective rescue efforts. Furthermore FEMA has manpower but not enough to effectively assist the entire affected area without getting the cooperation and assistance of local government. It's also funny how people have solutions to disasters after the fact. The amount of variables in a situation that large are unaccountable for. They did what they could, most countries dont even have a response force... Id like an example of a country or organization that has done better in a comprable situation.
And sorry about Queensland... hope you guys do well considering the damage going on over there

Dude... you said it yourself. Their job is to respond. They failed hard at responding to Katrina. No one has ever ragged on FEMA for failing to
prevent
a disaster. That'd be impossible.
I'm going to let the foreigners chime in on the disaster response agencies in their respective countries. The Aussies have already said their people have done a masterful job in this large scale flooding they're enduring. I'd be curious to hear more about their system.

err.. The state government of the disaster zone is responsible for the safety and it asks help from the rest of Australia, e.g specialists and civilians to help with the disaster? Im really not to sure but what ive always seen its been like that.
Usually one Tv station buys the right to hold a Donation program for the disaster that usually gets around 10million dollars that goes directly to help with the disaster and the charity organisations like red cross and salvation army help with clothes, food etc.
If needed, fireman or police can be contracted from other states to help and the military helps with cleanup effort of evacuation and rebuilding (among the normal construction agencies)

Its strange that they think people deserve something for free (for instance, basic need like health care) and they still can't form some kind of compromise agreement about it. As a european I shudder when I think of the health care in US, being turned away from a hospital because you dont have insurance etc. Its just something we would consider inhumane in norway and below our scoiety as a whole.
I also thought this every man can own his gun and do what he want with his life was a god given hard fought value of the people still emanating from the writ of independence.

About half of us in the US think it's inhumane to turn people away from a hospital, or that it's ok to send a family into debt because their kid broke a leg. The other half... will think what they will.
...You're Norwegian? I always thought you were German. a-ha is from Norway. So is Gorgoroth. Such good music comes from there.

My point was this, by the way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Ni%C3%B1o-Southern_Oscillation#ENSO_and_global_warming
So yes, global warming does have something to do with this. It doesn't cause the ENSO occurrences but it does have a significant impact on them.

Climate changes not having 100% proven drastic effects doesn't mean we can't aim to have a more environmentally friendly word. I believe the vast majority of people will agree that a society that devours itself is less advanced than one that maintains it's own base of nurture as well as possible. And our society isn't advanced. We've barely had 50 years of something resembling world peace, hunger, sickness and starvation and the riches of the many vs the few dominate our planet.
Consumerism. People want new clothes, new things, new cars, bigger houses, deeper swimming pool.
Our technological breakthroughs seem to be farther and farther between. Electric light, the internet. What are these things? It's a improved energy system, it's a improves sharing of the word's intellectual capital. These are getting old and convenient now, not the amazing technical solutions they used to be. When's the next breakthrough?
Our fields of science and crafting develop and become more complex, the total sum of knowledge in each profession becomes deeper and more 'numerous'. Specialists meeting each other (Car mechanic, IT technician) hardly understand what each other are doing. Value of craft becomes less ruled by perceived sweat of the brow and materials used, and immaterial values like where a building is placed increases its value.
It's a complicated world.

Me, I relate consumerism more and more to the widespread femine culture. It seems to be closely related with a retarded spending creating the need for uncessary amounts of luxury products.
I wonder how many men owned more than 2-3 pair of shoes back in the 1900s. Today women have like 20 pairs of shoes, 100 tops, 50 pants. And they still buy new shit.
Everyone buys a new phone each year to do stuff they could achieve by moving their ass to a suitable location. LOOK I CAN PLAY MUSIC AND BE ON THE INTERNET ON MY CELL PHONE. Great, huh?
Art has been dumbed down for the vast majority, our leading music artist that get the most coverage are raging drooling retards using voice synthetizers to fake that they can sing a note etc.
Today's society is repulsive in many ways. We get by on the good things by focusing on them and ignoring the other stuff. It's the only way to stay sane.
