To get down to the mantle where the magma is you need to go down 30 kilometres minimum. There is only minuscule amounts of magma in the crust, even beneath an active volcano. The only lava that would be exposed by bombing would be calm and still, thus no eruption. And when we safely get Iceland down below sea-level any further eruptions will be harmless. |

Especially if you use the H-bomb alternative! You wouldn't even have to build new ones, just take from stockpiles and refrain from replenishing them. Thus making the world a better place in several ways! Then we just move the Icelanders to a country with more hospitable climate. Sweden has plenty of free space for them and a reasonable climate! This way everyone except the Icelanders are happy (and who cares about them, really), the world is marginally safer and we greatly reduce the costs for the global infrastructure. And it's not like they could do anything about it if the major nations would want to do this, UN is their bitch and Iceland lacks an army. |

Yeah sure every single volcano on Iceland would likely start erupting the moment the h-bombs land but not anywhere else! And since the detonations will occur so fast they wont be erupting for long before Iceland is safely beneath the ocean. There is another risk though, and that is all the debris that will be flung high up into the atmosphere by the explosions... But it's a short term cost (that will simultaneously slow down global warming btw) for a long term benefit. Also we make sure Iceland never crashes the international economy ever again! |
