I remember it was hard to get into, but I'm not sure at what point I suddenly realized how it all worked.

Also, HoI3 has some problems (which may have been fixed by now I guess):
* AI getting stuck with the Channel Islands
* Supply issues even though there shouldn't be any
* 30 days worth of supplies once cut off from supplies
* I remember there were some lesser things aswell

That 3rd one was especially hilarious with huge airborne armies insta-encircling divisions/corps.

If you want to play multiplayer I can recommend this group http://steamcommunity.com/groups/commandersofhoi3

You mind posting links to the HoI 2 mods and expansions you're talking about?

Will the fact that I have a less-than-legit version stop me from playing online? I'm guessing it would, wouldn't it?

HOI is such a big/long game playing multiplayer is mostly ridiculous.  If you can manage it or have the patient, best of luck!  That being said it is the best large scale strategic WW2 game so far.  There are issues with it but, its a good stab at it.

That being said, its not that expensive ($20 on steam) and shelling out some cash to the developers will help them make another one or improve the current stuff.  Paradox is not EA or some other big name game designer.  So cut these guys some slack and stop being a cheap bastard.

There is absolutely no problem playing multi with an organised group. The link Pony posted is a good example, me and pony play every fridya with that one.

Demon posession is real and it's not funny, it's the creepiest thing you will ever experience.

I would also like to add I watch fox news everyday all day and will continue to watch it while being proud of that fact. I'm sure you enjoy your communist news network just as much.

Nope, not if you follow Ponys link Wink.

Otherwise yeah because you cant organise big multiplayer games without the forums (which you wont have access to) or use the meta-browser ingame.

no battle like total war, and it's not like civ. Battles are fought onmap, units have stats and dices roll, you also get bonuses from leaders etc. If you can call it snything it would be 'axis and allies' on steorids.

More like civ would be Europa Universalis. 3 is p.awesome

If someone is new i'd suggest you start with Europa universalis 3 with all expansions. its simpler than hearts of iron 3.

For the record, I would buy it if I could get it in retail. I really did look for it in the bigger retail stores, but they simply don't have it. And for some reason, ordering it would cost me €20 because that's "the normal fee".

I don't have the means to buy stuff online (yet).

Which is what I did, and why I asked the question earlier.

I bought this and then shut it off 10 minutes later. I wanted a strategy war game, not a sim on how to manage supply lines.   Undecided

What exactly is so appealing about this game?

It's a complex and realistic GRAND strategy game, basically a chance to relive or change history on a huge strategic scale.

If you had played past 10 min then you'd probably realize that supplies aren't that important if you just know how they function. What matters more are the military operations and how you execute them.
