So the long awaited return of an epic 90s game has finally came.

I never played Jagged Alliance. Or maybe i did years back and found it too slow. But i think like 98% of old school gamers swear to it.
So i believe its a great series.

Anyways played the demo of the new game this week....
man it was pretty bad. It was all live action, which wouldnt be too bad ( i like shadow company) if it didnt mean that basically all you keep doing is putting people in observational mode. There seems to be very little strategy or the attempt to use strategy gets you killed because the controls are fluent enough to match the enemy AI.

Massive fan of JA2 and most of it's mods.

I'll give it a shot when I can(2 weeks) but I'd rather they just remade it as a TBS or a new game entirely. I also want an X-Com UFO defense remake.

I still have JA2 on my PC and play it 2-3 times a month. It's also loaded on my Junk laptop which holds my 90's game collection for when i go away for long periods of boredom. I love JA2. I'll have to see

But from what i understand JA2 had like dozens of unique mercs and you organize macro manage a country. Which sounds unique. What does XCom have?

Well First off. X-com is like the basis for Resource management and Turn based games.

Heres a video to watch while I explain the awesome factor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqrBWjiNyjY
Keep in mind the game is pretty old now so don't expect Uber graphics.

The game starts with a representation of the globe. You get to place your base on any land area in the world. You'll want to consider the nations/Continents around your base area because Initially you only have basic Radar which will only detect UFO's in a relatively small area.

You place and Name the base.
The base starts with 2 Interceptors(for shooting down UFO's) and a transport(for getting your operators to the crash site.

Basically you will detect and Engage UFO's, then you'll land troops at the crash site and eliminate all the Aliens. When you win a mission you recover tech and Corpses. These items are taken back to your base where you manage your Scientists and the projects they will research. Once you've researched something you can manufacture it with Engineers.

You manage the money that Governments/Continents pay you for defending them(thats your monthly budget-Do poorly and governments will cut funding or pull out entirely)

You will expand the facilities in your base to allow you better manufacturing, or more research or storage of live aliens. Eventually you will have multiple bases around the world and some really top notch aircraft to shootdown big UFO's and some really cool tech from Plasma weapons to Psi weapons.

You win the game by going to the Alien world and killing them.

Gotta love that intro for X-COM.

On topic, I enjoyed the Jagged Alliance demo. Care to further explain criticism?

Because it was designed for Dos you may need a program like Dosbox to simulate a slower processor speed.

Trying to play Dos games on a modern PC is insanely fast

Also it goes by either X-Com: UFO Defense or X-Com: Enemy Unknown

X-Com: Terror from the Deep is the 2nd game and is essentially the same but reskinned and then X-Com: Apocalypse is completely different and instead of protecting the world you protect some future city that's humanities last stand(or something) Apocalypse is different in alot of ways and most people say worse.

there is basically an xcom:enemy unknown clone out since years named ufo:extraterrestrials which should be close to original xcom

http://ufo.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/

furthermore there is a remake anounced by firaxis (civilization4+5)

This is a free X-Com UFO copy. I have played it a good bit until I quit, its pretty fun. But I think the actual X-Com games are much better.

If this one gets you bored dont let it turn you off from other X-Com games.

Edit: Oh and dont forget, Tech up as fast or the game can very hard very quickly.

If you want what looks to be the proper remake for xcom...

Xenonauts, look it up, seems a hundred times more promising than the firaxis one

And for what it's worth, I think the new jagged alliance might be fun, even if the difficulty was a bit skewed in the demo. It might not be Jagged Alliance proper but it's fun for what it is.

On dosbox just use the cycles command in console.

For warcraft 2 I was using cycles = 25000, can't remember if it was game specific or machine specific.
