What you neglect to mention is that in that episode Hawking does not state whether God truly did or did not create the universe, he simply explores the various theories and thoughts of various cosmologists regarding the subject. Hawking himself has described himself as an agnostic, claiming he believes a God-type being may have created the universe and set the laws of science in place.

Dear god, did you even watch it at all?

I hate to break it to you guys but most of the world wouldn't know the answer to those questions either. Most people are fucking dumber then a box of rocks, or just don't care. This is why you should have to take a test in order to vote. Then we wouldn't elect worthless piece of shit politicians to office who don't care about America just about pampering their pockets with the hard earned cash of others. Man, does stupidity make me rage.

Actually dinosaurs and humans are technically living together right now. The dinosaurs didn't all go extinct, they evolved into mostly various species of birds. The closest genetic relative to a T-Rex is a chicken.

Here's one of thousands of articles on it: http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2007/04/tyrannosaurus_rex_protein_reve.php

yeah, okay,I am quite sure that most are talking and thinking about big dinosaurs, not chicken. If someone told me,t-rex actually aint extinct it evolved into chicken,I am quite sure that my reaction would be to laugh in his face...on the other hand, you should tell Mcdonalds to patent T-rex nuggets, would probably earn you some $

Weeeee another America bashing thread, yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Europe is no better the under lying socioeconomic problems in America are what lead to bad education not to mention the large gaps between suburban and rural after all the USA is 90% Rural land after all...and subjective statistical studies done such as these make my brain hurt.

Also anyone who studies science and accepts the knowledge they receive should know that knowledge is accepted never proven everything you know is an accepted knowledge never a truth nothing is 100% Cheesy this might step into philosophical knowledge but your theory is just as good as mine, also Smurf 2+2=4 and 1+1=2 is a accepted theory is not fully proven, it's just the best thing we have now that works... Just like 400 years ago the sun revolving around the earth worked for most astronomical equations.

This might come off as a bit retarded I'm tired forgive meeeee.

Wow I just read the study methodology sorry but this isn't a study that should be generalized in any way, for ye who love to bash...
Quote
Methodology
This survey was conducted by telephone within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of the California Academy of Science between December 17 and December 21, 2008 among 1,002 adults ages 18+. For complete methodology, including weighting variables, please contact Andrew Ng at 415.379.5123 or Kelly Taylor at 415.359.2313.

A sample of 1,002 is NOT a generalizable sample...A sample of 1,002 adults cannot reflect a country of 300 million They did no population reflection we have no idea if those people even reflect the percentages of the population the age group the sex...bad survey is baaaad.

For all you smart Europeans I would have expected you guys to catch onto something so simple.

Of course that study is probably bullshit, as are a lot of studies. Though that doesn't mean your country doesn't have a LOT of stupid people  Tongue

Does it matter whether or not someone is stupid individually for a population of 300?

Oh please I know for a fact Belgium has retards too but I'm not playing my biased opinion into the fact that they exist.
Let me make a study on the reading ability of Belgium Ill start calling up all the retarded dutch people.
U mad? I'm scientific nao bro.

Trust me every country has retards and religious nuts... Americas retards and religious nuts are predominantly outspoken.

Yeah it does when people are basing the validity of a nations intelligence on it ;-;

All scientific studies of this sort have pretty much exactly the same methodology. Assuming they picked people at random (which I would be very surprised if they didn't) the survey is LEGIT.

It does not matter if
A: Americas retards and religious nuts are predominantly outspoken.
B: There are so many retards because of the sheer size of the population.

All that matters is what % of the population are stupid.

Finally the study doesn't meassure intelligence, it meassures EXTREMELY BASIC scientific knowledge. Its the level of scientific knowledge everyone should know by the time they are 10 years old. Its like forgetting/not knowing what multiplication or division is. This could be because they were stupid or have had a pretty damn shitty education or maybe something else, but it does not equate to "retardness".

If you were to have a random selection then sure. You wouldn't be scientific though if you selected people like you describe you would.

His point was that 1000 people is far too small of a sample size. You cannot determine the % of 300 million people who know something based on a sample size of 1000. If I ask one person in the world a basic scientific question and they answer it wrong, is every single person in the world uneducated? After all, 100% of people answered my survey wrong.

Okay let me do the math real quick ok?

a sample size of 1000 represents 300,000,000
that's a 3.33333333 × 10-6 percent.

Now Belgium's population is a mere 10,000,000
(11 000 000 x .00000033 × 10) - 6 = 30.3

If I took 30 Belgium people and made the same assumption it'd be the equivalent of this study.
A good sample size is 1% or 2 % of the population based on a reflection of ethnicity and age

You don't need to quote me if you're replying to something ontop of it...

It was a mathematical question not a statistical one.

Provide a counter example or something just don't say its wrong.

I was just simply doing the percentages explaining how small the sample is.

Theres 2 populations. In one of them theres 10 guys (population a), in the other 100 million (population b).

You then undertake a study and ask a 1 million souls if they like x or why. You would still "only" get 1% of the population

If you want to make a study of population a you cant just ask 1 guy what he thinks and then call it a day DESPITE it now being 10 times larger than the study of population b %-vice!

It is often more important how many you interview than how large a % it is.
