Depends, alot of companies have done f2p badly, but i hope they take off after Lotro who's f2p is done quite well the majority being cosmetic items or an insane amount of expensive horses (which i see all over the place) also some items which make leveling easier mainly xp x2 for an hour type things. Also the amount of money that can be made by selling respec tokens.
but your right f2p can destroy a game

MMO are so fail when it comes to innovation.
I feel a good IP should stay far away from browser games or MMO.
Not that a good one can be done, but seems developers want to copy the WOW/EQ formula.
