I wanted to make a quick post on the benefits of using a web-based system to purchase and buy units and abilities as well as using the web-based system to control doctrines and other features.  This is one of the main benefits Europe In Ruins has over other modifications, other than the whole persistency and grand war thing (assuming you're into that).

Normally, when developing any modification, there are some limits to what's possible.  In Company of Heroes, this is evident with both the number of races (sides), and the doctrine choices.  However, we are able to overcome these limitations by using a web-based management system which provides the information to Company of Heroes.  Europe In Ruins could theoretically have an unlimited number of races and doctrines (including doctrine abilities).

As you may know, each battle in Europe In Ruins will require the downloading of a file.  This file, which is a packed SGA, will provide all the information for each player in the battle.  This information can be anything from their available units, to their munition resources, to their doctrine abilities.  As we send this information to Company of Heroes and parse it with SCAR, it opens up a wide array of possibilities, including those mentioned above.

With the recently released model explorer, it'd be possible to have both the Eastern and Pacific fronts and expand our war map beyond Western Europe.  As we continue moving forward in our development process, there are an infinite number of possibilities.

So, somebody needs to get cracking and make models and animations, do the balancing, and the testing of a russian army.

Commisar: 200MP 1pop (Does not retreat.  Shoots people who do.)
Conscript: 50MP 1pop (Useless, but it's your only massed infantry unit.)
T34/35: 300MP 1pop (Still can't stand toe-to-toe with a panther, but you have hundreds, baby!)

I was working on an ostfront mod not so long ago. I think it'd be very interesting to have ourselves a battle on the eastern front, but the pacific seems a little far out for me.

Eh, most the pacific fighting was on islands, which
A) Would be annoying as hell to replicate
B) Would require EXTENSIVE texture work
C) Is boring to fight on anyways (One team climb up our huge mountain anyone?)
D) The landing/attacking team would always be at a massive disadvantage.

Not nesecellery.  The scale the Company of Heroes playes at means that we could have beach landings, or taking over airports or anything in between.

I'm not saying it would be easy, i'm just saying it would be awsome.

Well if awesome is by definition a very boring and frustrating artillery fight, then that's what the pacific will be.

Don't be silly! Company of heroes is about replaying events that actually happenned.  Europe in Ruins is about making at entire alternate history of warfare in the european theatre.

If matches degrade into long winded exchnages of artillery, then that's the players fault.

How many 3v3's and 4v4's have you played on stock maps? They always degrade into some kind of artillery fest with limited, but intense action. With the narrow range of operations in the pacific theatre, i could imagine it would be grossly difficult to advance at all.  Besides, there are few epic battles that occurred in the pacific on land - most were at sea.

Let's not degrade.

It's Europe in Ruins and Europe is the only thing CoH or the worldbuilder can offer for that matter Wink.

...Well, there's no way to accurately reflect the Western Front in a balanced RTS. Even EIR can't do this...

However, EIR is fun to play, and that's all that matters to me.

I just happened to read this today. I have a team working on an eastern front mod. We are going to try to include a campaign as well in the mix. When we really get it rolling EiR could use stuff from our mod tweaked to their needs. Like skunker said a while back about the pacific, it requires a lot of texture work. I am running into this problem myself. I am not much of a 2d artist, here is the 3d stuff I have done so far: http://www.easternfront.org/background.jpg (If anybody here is interested in helping out shoot me an email Wink ) I love the way EiR plays and it would be really cool to see the eastern front in it. Check it out, http://www.easternfront.org
