So as Nikomas said last week, this game is really, really, really good. I've been waiting for a solid entry in the 4x genre for a while. La st night we had an 8 player game and, although it was beset by some really slow turn-ending and connection issues, it still was great. If I hadn't of had work the next morning I'd have stayed up all night playing.

With that being said, it's a complex game and I'm pretty mediocre at it at the moment. I was Sophons last night and I still had way less research per turn than my allies despite the fact that my race is supposed to excell in that area. My problem is I'm not terribly experienced and I need to learn more about basic game mechanics. I've only played two games, and one of those was vs computers and the other one didn't come close to being finished, so I'm up for more info.

With that being said, I'd like some insight from everyone who plays. Some answers will vary according to civilzation of course, but just feel free to give as much info as you like:

Namely:

1. What do the first 20 turns look like for you? What do you build first, second, third, fourth, fifth? What do you research?

2. Improvements: Which ones are essential, which ones are "worth it" if you have time, and which ones are to be avoided like the plague?

3. Planets/Systems: Settling new systems/building exploitations, moon surveys, etc. What's the basic methodology here?

4. Ship Design/Combat: When do you start building, what kind of weapons/shields/support tools work? Should you go with a balanced across the board approach, or stock up in one or two core weapon types? What about repair modules/armour etc.? When is it the right time to start building warships? How do you balance that while also trying to upgrade your systems/economy?

5. Research: Which research paths are essential early on? How do you balance advancement in all four trees, or do you invariable end up mostly ignoring 1-2?

I'm trying to stick to the UE, which is a "hard" race to play early game. Right now I just try to get off my homeworld as fast as possible and find a system that's a good investment.

Then just tech fairly evenly (Depending on other things, like immediate needs for planetary colonization or weapons). After that, build my ships and start slowly expanding.

I prefer the warlike races myself. Usually i get off to a great start and someone dies but neither the shape we played or my horrible start allowed me to do any of that last night(first colony at turn 14/15)

Food exploitation>research N-way fusion(first Ind improvement), then Research Alien grafting(improves food exploitation) >Colony ship>research colony types you found>Colony ship>colony ship> Geothermal plants(if you found tundra or good production planet types)

My start is usually pretty flexible. Especially with the massive amount of "No-rush" map types favoured by the pansies among us.

If I know it's a map type with alot of Wormholes thats almost a B-line tech to get. The sooner you get it the sooner you reach the core and grab the better systems.

I found UE to be incredibly slow to start. painfully slow infact(they can't remove Mineral poor until 'Soil revivification', which is extra far into the tree).

Pilgrams are insane at expansion. The happiness trait allows you to tax them that little bit extra and not suffer for it. There is however a turn 10-15 dust slump as pilgrams. as you continue paying the upkeep on system Improvements onboard the evacuation ship but the population earns 0 until it finds a planet. Just watch out for it.

On steam it says this game is out in July, are you guys playing some kind of beta?

Edit: I see. Purchased. I've always enjoyed this type of game since I was a kid, maybe time to rekindle my interest with a modern iteration. Something to do next weekend when the patch does not show up? Wink

Loading games seems to be broken, so don't bother saving to rehost.

Aww damn such a good game, must be a patch that breaks previous saved games due to the extent of changes.

Vivie and I loaded a save just fine shortly after you said it wouldn't work. I think that was an isolated incident.

5 saves of the same game? Or 5 different games? My guess would be that fairly early on something corrupted the game in some way. I tried to initiate a battle and it never went through which caused our game to freeze after we ended our turns. Something similar may have happened but before any of your autosaves.

Epiphany.

Game needs tech Brokering from Civ4 or Research Agreements from Civ5

(the option in Civ4 meant you could not trade away a tech unless you learned it. Which meant no 3rd party sales.)

Research agreements in Civ 5 are something agreed to by players where you each expend an amount of gold and after #X turns you each receive a free technology. The interesting caveat is that you couldn't declare war on eachother or the agreement was ended prematurely with no tech.(so yes you could bluff someone into security by entering into an Agreement)

Any race can be, depends on what else you want to do. Sowers are probably the number 1 easy mode race at the moment, they can use Industry to substitute for anything else they need meaning they have massive production.
