So every once in a while a game comes along that forces me to upgrade my computer. This time around it's Planetside 2.

So I thought I'd ask you guys for help choosing parts. I have absolutely no idea which hardware/manufacturer is the best/cost efficient now a days. It has to fit the recommended specs which are these:

Processor    Intel i5 processor or higher / AMD Phenom II X6 or higher
Memory    8 GB RAM
Video Memory    1,024 MB RAM
Video Card    nVidia GeForce 500 series or higher / AMD HD 6870 or higher

Also, can you guys recommend any water cooling? Loud fans have slowly eroded my sanity over the years.

I would also like to add I watch fox news everyday all day and will continue to watch it while being proud of that fact. I'm sure you enjoy your communist news network just as much.

Don't skimp on the power supply or you'll be looking for new hardware again very soon.

some people like to look at high end stock computers such as alienware or something and just make a computer. Always invest in better cooling.

I think you should get an i7 instead of i5. especially planetside 2 is very cpu intensive.
I'm running an i52500k 3.3ghz, 560gtx ti sli, SSD, 8gb ram and PS2 gets down to 30fps in intense battles (which are most battles). reducing my graphics from high to low does not change my FPS at all. a sign the CPU is the bottleneck.

personally im using a MSI 560 gtx ti twin frozer now and I am not disappointed. used an AMD card before, thing was 90c during gaming and broke within 1,5 years. these cards are running in SLI and never get above 70c really. they are also very silent. I don't know anything about watercooling but it sounds unnecessary and a source for trouble.
the 560gtx ti is quite old by now again tho, it can run games like PS2 and BF3 at around 60 fps on LOW graphics, there is a new version out already tho, the MSI N660Ti, dont know how expensive it is for you but it looks good.

Planetside doesn't even have high specs, just play on normal settings instead of ultra graphic settings.

Also no point getting intel quad core processors when you can get octa core amd processors.

Sharks are not monsters Henley, they are cute, cuddly and misunderstood. They love humans. sometimes they love TOO much. They love people so much that sometimes their kisses separate people into two flailing pieces which are consumed by other sharks in a frenzy of peace and joy.

nothing yet is optimised for anything above a quadcore, all you would be doing is bottlenecking your system.

Could not resist...

As for Planetside 2, I'm running it maxed on an i5-2500k and 580gtx with no problems at all, from anything I've seen an i5 still more than enough to max pretty much any game. An i7 is really only worth it if you do a lot of video/cpu intensive work.

Then again, how much have they come down in price since I bought my i5 over a year or so back? Might be more worth it now.

So you guys agree that Intel is better than AMD and nvidia is better than amd/ati, at least right now?

nvidia has better drivers, if you get the right builder they last longer, most games are better optimized for nividia.
with ati you get more performance for your buck (if you run the 3dmark tests, which brand is better depends a lot on the game too again).

Pretty much what leo said, but I flavor nvidia/intel mostly out of familiarity if anything else.

Speaking of PSU's, my current one is 650W. Will that be enough for the kind of hardware that we are talking about here?

I am currently looking at buying:

CM Storm Trooper Gaming Big Tower
Corsair H40 Hydro Series CPU water-cooling
2x Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Elite 1600Mhz 4GB
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 2GB PhysX CUDA
Intel Core™ i7 Quad i7-920

To go with my current:

650W PSU (with 2x 6-pin) and GA-H55M-UD2H motherboard

Any comments?

The only problem I see is that a Geforce GTX650 is slower then the old GTX560(TI). Maybe you can save some money when
you buy a cheaper processor and invest the saved bucks into a better graphic card. You will get a slightly peformance decrease
in processor limited games (On the other side your processor gets bored because the GTX650 is trailing behind) but overall it
helps to improve the average peformance of the computer.

I'm not a big fan of investing a shitload of money into a good cpu. Currently I have one of the cheapest dual core for the Intel 1155
socket and Dark Souls is running in max details on HD resolution without a big deal. (Sometimes I have short peformance breaks, but
I always think about the money I saved)

I'm saying the parts you suggested are only slightly better than what you currently have. Is it really worth rebuilding your computer for what slight gain you might get? I mean I have the same set up that you do and I can run all games on the highest settings.

I haven't played planetside 2 yet but based on it's low specs, it really does seem like your crashes may not be related to performance.

There is a limited time offer on the site I usually buy computer parts from, where the i7 cost about as much as an i5.

What graphics card would you suggest?

I have a Radeon 4800 series graphics card, an i3 processor and 4gb RAM. These parts only barely meet the minimum requirements.

And you mean to tell me that an i7 is only marginally better than an i3??? Holy fucking shit man.
