Poll
Question: What do you think about torture?
Torture is a neccessary evil that we need.
Torture is ok if we use it, but not if the enemy uses it.
Torture is great and always ok.
Torture is barbaric and no civilized country uses it.
Torture is always wrong no matter what.
Fucked if I know.
It's ok as long as they are the scum of the earth.

Waste of time, immoral, and sadistic. What more do you need to know?

USA was the last western country to abolish slavery, with the exception of Nazi Germany that started using slaves again.

Except every major power has used labor camps.

Yeah why not just execute every single criminal? Would save a lot of money you know. Murder? Execution. Rape? Execution. Shoplifting? Execution. Jaywalking? Execution. Wouldn't be any crime left amirite?

I watched Django unchained yesterday and it got me thinking about slavery and the death penalty. USA was the last western country to abolish slavery, with the exception of Nazi Germany that started using slaves again.
USA is currently the only western country where you can be sentenced to death. The only 4 countries that executes more prisoners than USA is China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
Finally, afaik USA is the only western country that officially (many nations prob use torture even if it's illegal according to their own laws) allowed the use of torture on detainees until recently when Obama outlawed it.

Am I seeing a pattern here?

If the pattern is that America is one of the most backwards first-world countries then yes, that pattern has been quite evident to those who study history for quite some time.

and exactly how well is europe fairing right now? it's not like europe outside of germany is exactly a beacon of how to run things.

wish people would quit with the "well, america does it but other people dont, so it's wrong" mentality.

certain things work in certain places that it doesn't in other countries. Democracy obviously isn't a middle eastern thing, they can't grasp it. communism is good for some cultures, bad for others.

Horrible poll. Some preschooler must have made this, or did you copypaste it from wind's old philosophy notebook?

Here's how you do it:

Is there a limit to the amount of human lives we are willing to forfeit before we use torture in the attempt to save them?`

You know, for someone with your heritage you seem awfully cool about slavery. Slavery was obviously in the American culture and worked just fine amirite?

Yeah good way to blow it out of proportion. Maybe we need more guys like this around-

Well he sure does look like a happy guy!
You must be crazy to think the death sentence is a sign of a barbaric totalitarian regime just because totalitarian regimes have used it.

Now I will say there is more crazy people in the US than other countries, but get real eurotards, when you have serial killers who wont change there is no point in keeping them around. Its not like the death sentence is going to inspire more serial killers.

There is a very distinctive pattern when it comes to the death sentence. It is extremely rare for a democratic nation with relatively little corruption to have it, whilst a totalitarian state is almost guaranteed to have it. Why do you think this is?

Because some people seem to think its more civilized just because you lock the crazies up rather than kill them. Duh.

Of course some people think killing prisoners is ok and some don't. Some people think it's ok to do or not do a lot of things. But that doesn't answer the question you "replied" to, does it?

I get the feeling you knew that, though...

My question, is who cares whether a bunch of Euro's think something is civilized or not. We are talking about the continent with the worst effects on the world as a whole...ever.

Thankfully, it's all opinion on what is and is not acceptable, and opinions are like assholes.

I thought that the Mongols and Black Death came from Asia, not Europe...

Everything's assholes in the end. Even perception of what is construed to be your personal reality is just another asshole.

Quite pretentious, really, to think anything isn't someone else's asshole.

Oh wow, I didn't know international law and the treaties that codify them are just 'opinions'. You know the US too signed the human rights declaration as well as various other treaties pertaining the illegality of torture. And there is such a thing as Pacta sunt servanda, if the US doesn't honour it's agreements in this, how are we to still take them seriously elsewhere? And if we're just going to treat these matters this lightly, I can only fear for where it will lead us.

But hey, fuck what everyone else thinks right, and fuck international law, don't need it, never have. Just don't come QQing when that attitude bites you in the ass, as it already has several times in the past now.

Relax, game theory is only an opinion. Just like political theory, gravity, and algebra.

...well, technically, everything's opinions. Not that that's particularly enlightening or helpful.

Oh you know, USA doesn't need to stick to any international laws or treaties. UN says not to attack Iraq, blatant disregard for WTO guidelines and rules...

How so? Dictatorships are not democratic institutions. Why would popular opinion matter in such countries concerning the death penalty?

Ahhh, the US! A country can violate treaties and human rights excusing it as being for a just cause while a great number of its population will still regard itself the moral high ground of the universe! I wonder what else that reminds me of now that I think about it...?

Not the worst, sure... But great power, great responsibility, that kind of thing?

My question, is who cares whether a bunch of Euro's think something is civilized or not. We are talking about the continent with the worst effects on the world as a whole...ever.
We talking over all history or in recent memory? If A, then you should really shut up right now as you cannot possibly compare a mere child of a country that has only been around in the more modern times to a continent that has recorded history for thousands of years.

If the second what country is generally accepted to be the most responsible for the finanical crisis? I don't remember it being a european one but I somehow think you'll tell me it is anyway.

If we are going to play that game then your treasured constitution is merely the opinions of some men who won a revolution. Why is your abiding by these opinions so strongly, clearly, they are very outdated among several other things by now.

And by your standards laws are just opinions to and opinions are, well, you said it.
