coming out in a couple weeks. Pre-order now gets you a free copy of Crusader Kings 2 as well as the other pre-order DLC. I've already got it pre-ordered on Steam. Pretty excited they've spent a lot of time improving MP for this version. Anyone else going to be buying this?

CK 2 is superior. It's so vast and rich in gameplay and more complex. It has so many more gameplay aspects: plotting, assassinating, bribing, extorting, imprisoning, fabricating, landing, entitling, converting, crusading, pillaging, spying, maiming, blinding, castrating, banishing, marrying, betrothing and things like vassalage, diplomatic expansion, family dynasties, holy wars, character traits, mercenaries, holy orders, factions, rebels, invasions, retinues, historical and comedic events. However, singleplayer without dlc is very dull, it's all in the multiplayer with dlc.
Europa Universalis is still a good game though, some of the improvements look great like the ability to join multiplayer games in progress. It will allow huge multiplayer games with 20-32 players (the game can keep going even if a player disconnects) and it will also have this historical relevance, when one player leaves another player takes his place, much like how monarchs pass on their rule to their next of kin. So a country may follow one policy under one player and then another policy under another player.

CK2 is superior? Really? You haven't even played EU4 yet. And personally I enjoy EU3 more than CK2. And Ray...I've seen you play EU3, you won't be conquering the world anytime soon, even if you do preorder and get the tool to convert your save over from CK2 to EU4.

How is the EU series and what type of gameplay is it geared towards? I like to be a military expansionist and HOI and Victoria to a extent seem to fit the bill pretty well so far.
I like the array of diplomatic options in CK, but god the military part is super simplified.

The combat and diplomacy in Europa Universalis is very similar or identical to Victoria I & II. Only managing the state is very different.
I don't think the military aspect of CK2 is simplified. There are many ways you can affect the outcome of a battle. You can affect the size and or combat effectiveness of your army by maintaining good relations with your vassals and adapting the most fitting crown laws, hiring mercenaries, holy orders, appointing generals with the right skills and traits, attacking or defending on the right terrain to avoid or use terrain penalties, attrition and naval transports to your advantage, building retinues, forts and troop buildings accordingly, as well as researching different technologies.

Just to be honest Crusader Kings 2 is like kiddies first grand strategy game. Europa and especially Victoria 2 are just leagues ahead in the amount of knowledge in the game mechanics to play them well. Does being more complex make them better for the sake of being more complex? No, but I can say having played all of the major paradox franchises that Victoria 2 with the newest expansion feels the most rewarding and interesting of all their games. Its apples to oranges though, they're all really different games as you get in to them and they're all enjoyable.
