Upgrading/buying new computer
«

So, I think I'll try to get some new parts or maybe even a new computer between x-mas and new year. It would be awesome if we have some experts around to give me some advice etc.
This is what i currently have.
1,00 PCS 391447 Intel Core™ i7 920 Quad Processor
8MB, Boxed
1,00 PCS 340678 Corsair Powersupply 750W Black,ATX/EPS,
140mm Fan, 8xSATA, SLI
1,00 PCS 451753 Cooler Master Storm Scout Gaming chassi
Svart, 1x 140mm röd front fläkt, 1x 120mm röd bakre fläkt, 1x 40mm röd
top fläkt
1,00 PCS 393859 Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz 6GB CL9
Kit w/3x 2GB XMS3 modules, CL9-9-9-24, for Core i7
1,00 PCS 482045 XFX GeForce GTX 275 640M 896MB PhysX
PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI, HDCP, Graphics Plus, 640/2268MHz
1,00 PCS 391606 Western Digital Caviar® GreenPower™ 1TB
, Sata 3 Gb/s, 32MB Cache
1,00 PCS 427377 ASUS P6T Deluxe V2, X58, Socket-1366
DDR3, ATX, SLI&CrossFireX, Firewire, 2xGbLAN, 3xPCI-Ex(2.0)x16
So what I want to know is if there is any point upgrading this junk or buy a new one?
And yes it will mainly be for gaming!
Thanks

You can probably get some more RAM, you can easily get 2x8 MB for relatively cheap nowadays
You can also get a 660GTX for about 200 USD

Awesome, thanks. Would that be enough to play new games like rome total war 2, Dayz SA etc on high settings with decent fps?

Don't you already have enough spin-drives? If you can afford it I think you should buy an SSD hard drive instead for your OS and most demanding games/applications.

I would also like to add I watch fox news everyday all day and will continue to watch it while being proud of that fact. I'm sure you enjoy your communist news network just as much.

I can play Rome 2 on Extreme with 100 fps, takes it like a champ. I am quite happy with my 660GTX

Yea, SSDs are nicer, but they usually cost quite a bit more. To get a SSD with 512GB capacity, you are looking at around 400 USD vs. 50 USD for a spin drive with the same capacity.

SSD get 120 gb and just load most off the applications onto the disc driver instead that way the SSD can be used just for the gaming and pure speed.

Well basically you can upgrade your rig to last a couple more years easily by
1. overclock your cpu (if you havent already), you can buy a coolingblock(air) and you get them cheap for older models - it depends on your motherboard. overclocking is easy and gives you the most notable speed upgrade overall and helps the games. By buying a new cpu and not overclocking it you dont gain that much after all.
2. buy a new graph card, as suggested, makes a huge difference. Get a silent, single card with a good price value
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html
pick your priceclass
3A. a cheap SSD drive can make your games run a bit faster, but its not notable compared to these previous upgrades. you get the most notable speed buff if u install your whole windows on the ssd, but if youre an amateur like me then youll find it too much of a bother since the ssds have lot more issues than regular drives.
3B if you could find the exact same hard drive from some sales you could put your drives go RAID 0 which means both drives are read and written to the same time making the drive a lot faster while being dirt cheap, this speedbuff would affect everything on the hdds.
---------
However for upgrades 1 and 3b youll need to copy all your files just in case so more work involved.
If you dont understand any of this go for option 2.
-------
If ur buying a new expensive gaming rig - learn to overclock cpu, get raid 0 + ssds and think about what kind of graphics youll need (graph carsd are fucking expensive) and if it will be cheaper to get a 200€ one and upgrade it in 2 years than a 600€ one.
-----
myself id in your case do 1 + 2 + 3a and happily use the pc for 2 more years and get a new one then maybe.

Okay, so I'll try and learn about overclocking later. There is one thing I wonder though. Can I damage my gear by overclocking? Should I find someone who can do it for me or is it fairly simple so I can do it myself?
On another note, should I go for the 660GTX or what do you guys think?
Here is my computer.

Maybe I've said that before, but 770 would be better choice. It's more expensive, but also more worthy

Sorry, my bad. 770* Another thing is that I get blackscreens when I'm playing games like DayZ, Rome 2 etc. It goes from black-to back. On the most games i get the screen back, but in DayZ for example I have to restart the game. Most of the time I can avoid this by increasing the fanspeed on Afterburner.
I expect this happens when my graphic card gets to hot?
Will a 770 work well with the rest of my settings/gear? And do you see anything else that I really need to update?

Just google i7 920 overclocking, youll get step-to-step instructions how to do it. Still expect to use a couple full days of learning and doing, its a walk in the park only after reading the instructions. In order to break something you need to be stupid and do something it says in the instructions NOT to do. Being greedy will take a long time (you need to run stress testings with temperature program) and remember the last 100Mhz (eg 3.3ghz to 3.4ghz) really dont mean shit performancewise. So go for stable side first time. You need a custom cooler though, the stock ones are not good for OC.
http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_i7_920_overclocking
Looking at the above mentioned link for graph cards Id go for the Radeon R9 270. Id definitely not gor for the gtx770 since your CPU model is from 2008 and even overclocked I think it will make the most bottlenecks in this setup, the GTX 770 will not bring you any additional benefits probably. (and it can run louder and hotter, but havent delved into details, getting a graph card from a manufacturer who has made a custom fan for it is recommended if you get it for same price tag, look for warranty-period to see what card will run stable (3 years means stable))
If I were buying a new comp Id get that 770gtx, but old CPU, old mobo, 1xbasic hdd, old memories mean you wont get everything out from a new expensive graph card so why waste money on it.
After OC and new graph card youll comp will rock anyway though and its good to learn basic OC now and then in a couple years you can OC your new rig and feel nerdpride.

770 GTX will work perfectly
A/C 750 W, so I don't see a problem here.
