"Niko's Vice news" Cheesy
Haven't readen the whole thread yet if it's mentioned, but Vice News is following the Ukraine incident pretty closely on the field. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Nmo9dZTmo0
It's not completely neutral source as one does not exists, but I'd say it's more neutral than most of the western or russian news channels.

They say no mayday calls were issued. Which intrigues me. Maybe the cockpit voice recorder will hold something.

Either the missile completely cleared out the cockpit, the radio equipment, or caused instant combustion of the fuel system. The pictures I saw showed a clear crash zone so I doubt the fuel combustion(at least at altitude) but I could be wrong.

I was also pretty sure civilian aircraft had been refitted with indicators in the event of missile lock? Something like a Buk should definitely set off alarm bells.

I don't know the altitude it was flying at, but hand held would also cause a panic.

The plane was flying at around 10km altitude. No way a handheld weapon could have touched there with such accuracy. It's a shame that such things can occur, claiming lives including people who were on their way to an AIDS conference in oder to try to make the world a better place...
May they rest in peace.. Whoever did this has gone too far this time.

I honestly could see why Russia took over Crimea. They wanted that military base of theirs to have access to black sea.

But really this ukraine thing is becoming a civil war soon. I'm baffled as of why they took out a civilian airliner.

I think it's pretty obvious the separatists shot it down by mistake. They do have at least one BUK missile system in their possession, which they openly boasted about several weeks ago. Not to mention the intercepted phone calls between rebel leaders and the social media mishap (where they claim to have shot down at least one, possibly two, Ukrainian cargo planes at the time the Malaysia Airlines plane went down only to then remove it several hours later)

Mayne both sides shot it down trying to blame the other side. Two stupids, one thought, poor pilot not knowing which side to dodge to.

Why yes Russia, hand over modern anti-air missiles to armed possibly somewhat fanatical rebels that might not have proper training or the discipline to operate them! What could possibly go wrong!? Always worked in the past has it not?

Sigh...

We have now the first situation since 2001 where the german policy say we must fight now, so I think the separatists can only save their survival now if they the unlucky guys which the airplane shoot down extradite to international court of justice in Den Hague.
