Shutting Down?
«
on:
January 06, 2008, 08:55:27 am »
Before I start, I know that there are quite a few players that are understandibly pissed off with me, and I expect them to be.
Last night when I played with Cozmo, Newbie, Wraith, etc. everything went fine and there were no troubles.
However, this morning I've been having problems. I start playing, after 5 or 6 minutes my computer just shuts down with no warning whatsoever...AmPm said it sounds like it's been overheating, which is why I'm leaving it off for now (I'm using my laptop).
What I don't understand is that EIR is a mod for CoH. When I play EIR, after 5 or 6 minutes it shuts off. When I play CoH Vanilla...I can play for hours without it doing anything. After the second time it shut down today, I decided to play CoH for an hour to see if it would shut down. It didn't...
What I want to know is...Why is it shutting down after a few minutes of EIR, but not CoH Vanilla? I'd like to get this sorted if possible because every game I try and play to see if I have fixed it, ends up in my computer shutting down and people beggining to hate me and not want to play with me.
Again, any help would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance!

That is odd, since as you said vCOH doesnt cause you to crash, there is a bit more computing going on in EIR, but I wouldnt think that it would cause your CPU to overheat.
Have you tried blowing out your case, reseating everything, and as a last resort pulling the CPU out and putting more arctic silver on it?

I uhh...Have no idea what your talking about :S
I've cleaned some dust inside...but that's all I've done. Is there anything I could do to maybe lower CPU usage or whatever?

Well first off take a vaccum and get all the dust and crap out of there (make sure the fans are clear too). If you havent done this in a long time it could be cutting off the ciculation of air to your CPU causing it to overheat and shut down.
Umm if you have never taken computer parts out then I would venture to say that you have to be careful and if you dont have extra money laying around to replace parts that may have broke you would be better off taking it to a computer place, having them diagnose the problem and then paying the price to have it fixed.

I've cleaned the dust with a vacuum and all the fans are clear, but I have £0 to spend on fixing the computer at the moment
I left it on all night...could that be a problem?

How long should I let it cool down for?
And I'm afraid that even if I do let it cool down, people won't play with me to see if that fixes it...Lol.
Is there and option anywhere to do 1vs1's as...practices? So players may either check out stuff or see if their game works (Like in my case
) with someone else who doesn't mind playing a friendly for a while. What I mean by practice is, any kills or exp or anything don't count to your company or whatever.

I dont think leaving it on is the problem. Most computers now can run for weeks without a reboot even. If your having problems with it shutting off after it starts a program you have a problem. I would say either your CPU or your graphics card, for a start.

It's at least 5 or 6 minutes after we've started playing. I can pretty much guarentee it's my CPU, though.
And I seem to think that leaving it on COULD be a problem, since it was on during the night and when I came on to play it would overheat. But last night I didn't have it on all day, only during the night and I had no problems playing.

vCOH is not nearly as intensive as EIR. We have many more jobs running and more entities, upgrades, and abilities.

Yeah, but what I don't understand is why it ran perfectly last night but not today :S
One thing that came to mind is...I downloaded ALOT of Ram inbetween last night and today. If I free some space on my computer, could it solve a problem or two?

It could... not very likely.
You may try uninstalling and reinstalling the mod. Make sure each time you play you try a different map to make sure that it isn't one map causing the problem.

I did a 1vs1 with Cozmo to see if it would crash after I did some stuff...it worked fine :S
That is one reason why I'm stupidly thinking it could be Ram problems. I remember being told about BF2 that it needs spare Ram on your computer to do something with it (I'm not a techie whizz, so I don't know much). My ram is pretty much full. I don't even have 10% free space on my computer at the moment, and thats now that I've deleted and uninstalled alot of stuff. (Big games, like BFME2, etc.)

No, not a problem like that.
An unexpected shutdown like that indeed sounds like an overheating issue. I would suggest using
Speedfan
to monitor your CPU temperature. If you need help with that, xFire me and I'll explain how it works.
As for why it suddenly stopped working.. that's how machines work. All parts lose performance over time. Maybe it just went over the edge today.

Actually, after getting rid of everything I downloaded it's started working perfectly again.
I just had a game 2vs2 and played for 50 minutes. No problems.
