I don't see the current economic crisis as the beginnings of a collapse, I see more of it as a downward swing on a pendulum. Historically these things happen in my country, due to changing political climates, conflicts, and acts of god. It can be seen at the turn of the 20th century, during the depression, the 1980's, and now, happens every 20-40 years, and happens all over the world at different times. The US isnt losing its economic empire status, rather its learning and adapting to an ever changing climate where nations are becoming more economically powerful. This can be seen in Europe, with the EU. I myself think were well on our way to establishing a world gov't based upon the example of the EU. Also, we need to stop exhibiting such nationalism as that we wish the downfall of other nations to prop ours up, we live in a global society, and this is very prevalent in the community that plays EIR.
And while this was off topic, back to what I meant. Having mandatory service isnt about enlarging the army, or being able to project military force, I put it out there as a means to focus and discipline the youth of america. Also, and as a means of returning the 2 years, the gov't would pay for 2 years of college if persons chose to do so. As well, having those youth participating in service would add to the economy by giving them steady paychecks which in turn go to buying goods to improve everything, and there would be more tax paying citizens because military service members do pay taxes. Military speaking yes, other nations would view it as possibly hostile, but if we dont project that force, then what does it matter?
I still believe that this nation is the best place on earth to start a business, go to college, and raise a family. I do love europe for its social stance politically, better benefits for persons, relaxed moral concepts, on issues like sex and abortion. I also love europe for its rich culture, which i plan on visiting this summer.
I digress. Bottom line is, I serve myself, the reasons I serve are to uphold the constitution, serve my fellow man, protect them, and for myself, I get a sense of pride from it. Now as a soldier I due as I am ordered, regardless if I feel if its just, do I agree with Iraq, hell no, but I did my tour and came back, I speak out against it, because that is my right as an american. The Iraq conflict will end soon, due to changing political climate, and I will be very happy when that day comes.

It isn't a collapse, but more like slowing down. When Clinton left office the economy was booming, and now with all of the crap that has happened in the last 7-8 years things are falling from the "high". If 5 is normal and 10 is omfgweRawesome we were at like a 8 and now we are slowly going down to a 5.
The reason why this is hurting so bad is that there are some dumb people that bought stuff with 0 money down, no need to pay for 2 years and other stuff that require money upfront, and now they need to pay, and people don't have the money....

the reason why there is crisis in the mnorgage department is because pople didn;t get fixed loans, they got loas that were 2-3% intrest but stated could rise at any time, but no one read that, so now the intrest god jacke dup to 10-20- sometimes as high as 30%.
Fixed rates will fluctuate but not nearly asmuch, while they were around 4-6%... people didn;t wanna spend that extra little biut thinking... Oh man, they will be this low forever.
People didn;t read what they signed and are now getting screwed, on top of that the sub primes made it worse as they took advantage pof people who never had the money int he first place and could on;lly afford such low intrest rates.
On top of that The federal goverment is bailing out Bear Sterns, while saying, "The people didn;t read what they signed its their faults no bail outs". bear Stearns was in the for front of handing out these sub prime loans....
the irony in that bail out and the hypcracy is ridiculous. I don;t agree people should be bailed out...but in a capilist system, the risks u take wither earn you money, or you go bankrupt. Now the same republicans fighting and complaining about Hillary's socialist plans for medicare, are doign the socalist thing with Bear sterns, while still painting hillary as the evil socalist.
Amazing...

One word: robots.
Would you want to fight a 7 foot flying mechanical beast with miniguns for arms?
No, let your 40 foot giant dinosaur robot kill it.
People have better things to do than kill each other.

Crono, the aim might not be to enlarge the military, but that IS what will happen. The American armed forces are currently 1.5 million strong, with 1.5 million in reserves. There are roughly 15 million males between 18 and 26. Of course, they won't all serve at the same time, but even if they at equally placed intervals, it's still 3.75 million people. And you have to remember that those 3.75 millions aren't qualified to be mechanics, or pilots, or other high-education jobs (plus the officers), and so these guys have to go in the army (the Navy doesn't have enough ships to put them all on board one). What this would means is, as I said, basically double the size of the army, whether you like it or not (and this is counting reserves).

Discipline, do think send young men to the front lines will teach discipline then, i would hate to see your America. It is not up to the state to inact discipline but for the parents and LOCAL officials, such as teachers and even police. Do you want the youth of America conferable with killing without regret, do you want them thinking like a solder!
Also though we may have a massive new young fit army, we can’t equip them, it just cost to much money. Also training would need to be simpler and more robust to accommodate the huge swell of young recruits.
we would have a huge ,cheep, army with little or no training. Witch is virtually useless nowadays.
We are beyond the point where numbers matter, its all about who has the best weapons on a strategic level. This is something for WWII not modern times. Numbers wont mean anything with the power of modern-day weapons such as the nuclear warhead or laser-guided missiles.
Political this not only would gain hostility from the rest of the world but also could provoke an attack on America itself. We simply could not withstand an attack; look how poor our reaction was to hurricane Katrina. Think of that but with every major city in America.

But US doesn't want to increase the size of the military, cause we never have a large force when we are at "peace". As soon as a war is over with we cut back to have fewer soldiers, because we don't need them.

You've more or less got the reasons behind the current global 'credit crisis' puddin although theres a little more to it.
Essentially banks were offering loans as mortgages to people who they normally would not do and then fail to properly check that these people could pay back the loans. They would then package these mortgages up and sell them on as 'good investments' despite the fact that they knew there was risk involved. The problem is, they underestimated the sheer number of people who would default on the loans. Investors who had bought in to these packages were stung badly and everyone lost confidence and faith. Because these bad loans had been packaged up and sold on, the majority of large banks and international investors became reluctant to invest any more because no one knew who was holding these 'bad loans.' Essentially a lack of confidence dried up the money markets and that is why National Banks throughout the world have been bailing out domestic banks, because no one else will.
Yes people should not have been taking on mortgages they couldn't afford but more importantly, the lenders should not have been lending to people without checking they could pay it back and they definitely should not have been selling on dodgy loans as AAA investements.

Sach its less of a global thing than a American thing. The banks up in Canada are A-Okay for example. It is true that the economy back lash dose hit most countries though, America is a big spender after all.

As a Brit, I can assure you its not confined to America. I think we were the first to nationalise a domestic bank as a direct result of the international credit crisis. Also, a lot, in fact i *think* most of the investment in to Western Banks were from Asian lenders, its very much an international issue.

I think you are very wrong here, I think you are forgetting how we came together after 9/11, and how strong peoples patriotism is. I think if someone attacked us they would be sorely mistaken if they thought that the non military members would sit back and let it happen. I guarantee that you would see "militia's" start up and fight back themselves. Im in the miliatry myself, so I would already be fighting, but if I wasnt you can bet that I would not sit back and let something happen without a fight.
Katrina was a completely seperate issue, they had things planned out but never tested them prior to actually needing to implement them. I doubt that anything like that would happen again, now that FEMA has new plans, that have been practiced and are ready for implementation.

I don't agree militaristic paranoia.
For mandatory 2 year service, I understand why it could be brought up, but I have better things to do than act as mercenary for a country I merely live in. I'm just not patriotic enough for it.
Plus there's more ways to become disciplined.

Howcome patriotism and military service are often shared together? Why can't one person be patriotic and not necessarily concerned with the military? The thought just came to me.
